Agreed it's not for everyone, and I would be glad for double glazing

Sorry it's not worked out for you

Interesting site.

Many people posting on this forum quote a multiplier of 2.5 when converting UK sterling incomes to A$ incomes for comparable lifestyles, but Numbeo gives much lower multipliers e.g.

Brisbane - Manchester 2.06
Brisbane - Reading 2.03
Sydney - London 1.75

which seem much more likely to me than an overall 2.5.

To be honest, it varies a lot on lifestyle. I know people in Perth who say it is about the same. I know people in Perth who find it 5x as expensive. We find it about 3.5x as expensive.

Can only speak for ourselves but definitely better standard of living here in Australia for me and my family viz -

1. Better schooling for our kids - better structured teaching, class size of 18, both have already shot up on their reading stages, open and approachable senior staff, lots of parental involvement, I could go on (and this is in a public not private school). The kids really love it here - have made lots of new friends very quickly and its great to see them so happy
2. Less work stress - for me, much better than working as a GP in the NHS
3. More family time - we get loads more time together
4. Better weather - sunny and warm every day. Can get out and about to do things and kids are always outside playing with their new pals
5. More money in the bank - better work package, salary sacrificing etc even though food etc are more expensive. By no means the be all and end all but certainly helps!

Each to their own but we are so glad we made the move, its been better for us than we could have ever imagined.

The thing about this question is it will be different for everyone, we are better off here in England both financially and mentally. That doesnt mean it will be for the next person. Our kids love it, there is so much for us to do. They are in a seconday school that has half the number of kids as their old primary.
We are able to indulge our hobbies much more here.
As I say though the next person will find the total opposite, that is why the question is impossible to answer.

It's too early to say how it's going to pan out for us financially but we are spending more time together over here as a family and have been able to get out every weekend, even though its winter.

Kind of agree now, some people will find it suits them - probably been here longer term when they had good exchange rates and could afford nice property before the boom.

Whole place is backwards, parochial, the Aussies are not very dynamic people and more and more it's becoming an isolated part of the world that really doesn't matter.

Great place to retire would be my opinion, but even then I'm not sure there is enough to do.

It's home for me now and I love it, but I felt the same (well not quite as much) 3 or 4 years ago. get over it or go back was my mindset and we stayed. As me old man says ya can only piss with the cock ya got. Probably best not to make out that everyone who stays is a mug though, it's only your opinion of the place
