Comparable London salary in Sydney

Give us your stats and evidence instead of 3 words.
Yes, we have been here before and all you came up with was I think ....
A survey which concludes (page 20) there are NO affordable markets in Australia and says Bendigo/Ballarat etc are severely unaffordable - 'you cannot be serious'. Frankly, who wants a house which is less than 3 times annual income?
It says, page 48 that Greater London median price is $310,000 and Sydney $642,700. Yeah right.

While it's been mentioned before...again...for some reason the table lists all currencies as dollars but without actually performing any exchange rate calculation. So it's actually referring to GBP310k vs AUD642k. They also don't convert the income figures so the ratios are still meaningful.

Geographia? Fantasia methinks.
Edited - Sorry I see your point but if it was £310,000 that's wrong too; GLA average is £475,940 which is about 50% more the figure quoted for London.

All the figures are in US dollars and it's US$310,000 not pounds for London. It lists median household income London as US$39,600 and Sydney US $77,400. Try telling BE peeps that properties in London are less than half the price of Sydney and Sydney incomes are nearly twice those of London.

Re: Comparable London salary in Sydney
Just a few days ago the land registry quoted it at GBP390k.

http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/__dat...20131125v2.pdf
Sorry but I find £390K unacceptable. The official London.gov.uk site quotes last year's London average considerably over this figure and other sources are talking way above this figure. e.g.
"Rightmove said the average asking price in London rose to £544,232 in October from £493,748 the previous month – an increase of more than 10%. Across England and Wales, the rise over the month was a more modest 2.8% to £252,418."
http://www.theguardian.com/money/201...ce-50000-month
"Prices in the capital also hit a record high, reaching an average asking price of £515,243, a 10.9pc rise over the year to date."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/p...irst-time.html
Here's the prices from the Land Registry, official London.gov.uk website for 2012:
All London average = £436,948 in 2012 (quoting Land Registry). http://data.london.gov.uk/datastore/...prices-borough
Click on the link for average house prices for London, click on the boroughs tab and you'll notice the all London average of £436,948 mentioned.
I also note that the Geographia survey does not include 14 of the Telegraph's 20 most expensive cities. It is a survey of 330 odd markets not world affordability as it claims.

I love these threads, someone asks if $x is enough for a comparable lifestyle and ends up being about gangs and which country has more poor people
To the OP the amount you quoted will not give you the same lifestyle, Australia is expensive.

To be honest Chris, I don't find it that expensive. Admittedly I'm not in Sydney, but I also didn't move from London. I have more free cash here despite now having to pay transport costs to get to work

I guess that is why it doesnt apply to everyone, we are better off here and find it generally cheaper but more importantly we are happier which of course is worth a LOT of money

Re: Comparable London salary in Sydney
Lol, well going back to the original post, i'm due to land in Sydney in January also, but negotiated salary by taking my current wage including bonus and multiplying it by 3 (to be cautious) they've agreed to pay this so i was fairly fortunate.... I also live in the north east of England so cost of living is a lot cheaper than in London so wanted to make sure I would be well placed to manage the transition.
One exercise I did though, which really helped was I looked at my current UK earnings and outgoings and worked out what % of my wage went on rent/car/mobiles/services etc. Then I researched what rent etc would cost in Sydney and added them together to get the same % of wage to see how much I would need to earn equivalent to maintain the same standard of living. Even if it seems like going into the far ends of a fart it's a good way to really get a broad view of what you can expect for your money to re-adjust your expectations if anything :-)

Re: Comparable London salary in Sydney
I think it's not that hard to negotiate 3x. (It happens). It's also why some people claim that Australia is not so expensive after all - not everything is 3x the UK price - if that makes sense.
