Comparable Australian Cities
Hi,
Gotta move down to Oz for a short while from the US for business relocation reasons. Trying to a heads up on comparable cities to New York or LA. Friends kinda said Sydney and Melbourne are bigger and interesting, but interested in gathering the real scoop from locals! Don't know anybody down there, and not sure about finding enough to do on weekends and stuff. Should I expect something smaller like Toronto, Vancouver, London (UK), I always get bored and extremely homesick after a while, but not in London. What would be the comparabe NY bar scene - all the variety and the dynamics etc, not looking for a bunch of older folks hanging out at a pub place or something with boring conversation. A lot of Americans who already visited, liked it initially but tired of "no worries" and the mere isolation from the rest of the world. Applicant |

Applicant,
I'm not a local but having visited Oz and USA I think you'll find they're very different. That said you should have no problem filling your weekends in Oz, however if your attitude towards the aussies is that you find them boring and smalltown you may be doing stuff on your own! |
All I wanted to know, was how does * * australian cities compare to American cities?
That's all - specifics? * *! that's all! I had a aus guy and girl relocate to my group at work in New York, showed them around, helped at work and even helped co-signed their first apartment. I asked for comaprisons and differences so I could have a good time and get some bring back some good experience. See what the * I get. The 2nd poster is a true *, Do not * answer at all! 2nd poster - what's your problem with Americans any way? I am sorry if US is a bigger economy, American music and movies dominate your local movie theaters and music stores (or should I say "shop" its commonwealth vocabulary) - I am * sorry, but hey just checking out the happening spots around Sydney. And if you don't have a life or don't know how to show a good time piss off! To the other, I met quite a few Irish and European holiday makers in NY and they all had wonderful experiences to share about OZ and NZ. They were kinda going around the globe, doing their working holiday as they put it, meeting new people and having fun. Share your experiences if you want, keep them coming........... Note from moderator: Please mind your language when posting |
Applicant,
Not sure if I upset you or Megalania but I'll answer anyway. Theres plenty going on in Oz, and nightlife certainly isnt restricted to sleepy pubs. From what you've said you're looking for perhaps you'd be better looking at Sydney or Melbourne but dont expect them to feel like NY. I have no problem with Americans (or any other nationality for that matter) but your initial enquiry did sound quite dismissive and negative about Oz, we're all desperate to get there so its bound to ruffle a few feathers! Hope you find what you're looking for p.s. as for specifics, my info would be a bit out of date so will leave that to the locals |
I was going to post an informative reply, but I'm afraid your language and attitude in that last post has changed my mind, and I completely agree with mcmercer - the Aussies will not like that attitude at all. You wanted to know about oz - well the first thing to learn is that Aussies do not like people thinking that they are boring etc - because they are not. It is however a different, and generally slower more relaxed pace of life than NY or London.
If you are coming here, get used to it. |

I guess my post sounds cocky and must show something other than what I truly intended.
Firstly, apologies to mcmercer and pollyane. I did not imply OZ was small, boring and anything less than the US. Neither did I mean Aussies were anything lesser than Americans or anything derogitory at all. Extremely sorry if my post sounded disrespectful or insulting to someone's nationality or country of origin. Again, all I was trying to find out the cool spots that's all from the real people, the real deal. No lonely planet guides etc, see what I am getting at. BTW, 5 years back just landed into San Francisco hit an open bar right on, before you know, this hot blonde sits next to me. Happens she's from Sydney and a school teacher of some sort. She was real friendly, we talked and ended up daitng each other a few times during her stay. We were both originally from far off places, OZ and NY - the distance just did us. But, Megalamia - I have no understanding where he/she is coming from. Hell with you! Know what - don't bother, either way it doesn't matter to me at all. Anyways, got a taste of OZ right here at home, New York! I am a go getter and sure meet some friendly and nice people when I get down to Sydney - atleast my Aussie coworkers seem very friendly over phone and at the off-sites we had at San Diego. No attitude problem. |
evo robins girlie says.....well as far as i can say..there are some us places much like oz places...large countries you get all sorts. My bestfriend was from california and we live in adelaide they are both pretty laid back........if its new yorky up and go you after..stick to the eastern states...bigger..more people more going on at night and in a business sense....

Thanks Evorobin,
Thas was a nice response after all this, which I am being accused of starting. I never for a minute implied everything in US was better and bigger, yes it may be true may not be. Do I care personally, hell no! But am I bitching about that I own a Jersey Condo overlooking the Manhattan skyline or having a leased BMW and working at wall st plaza. Am I arrogant - judge whatever you may! Am I happy that I have all these material things - its a "matter of convenience" that's what my new Norwegian colleague puts as (he just got transfered from the Munich office to the NY branch). But yes, I like the opportunity this country can provide, as far as my career and life style options goes. Typically, during college days the bar scene and private parties would go upto almost dawn. But now 6 years into the corporate world, I have changed so much. You can't party till dawn even on weekends. But you did not already check it out - the variety, the open acceptance and unpretentiousness of NY night life can be pretty cool to check out, provided you hit the right spots and the right crowd. On the other note, I am defintely not looking for an after office spot, hanging out with the boyz from the office etc, people in ties and button downs. Those casino/gambling turned bars won't cut it either - too formal or mainstream, but could be interesting to experience it, may be I would like it. I remember they did a tourist/places of interest show/series on OZ, televised on PBS station in NY. I had watched it, the beaches were gorgeous and really down to earth atmosphere - would defintely do that after work hours and then chill out some place afterwards. |

Applicant I find the Americans that are homesick and are complaining about how long it takes to get back home are the ones complaining of isolation. If you like a relaxed no nonsense place (the no worries attitude)then you will like Oz. If you are an uptight New Yorker who wants the latest and best now then I suggest staying put. It depends on what floats your boat. |
The trouble with the USA is that it has more than its fair share of wankers like yourself, eager to believe that nyc or usa is the only habitation on this planet.
You seem like the usual type that would visit a farm in another country, see the backhoes and other farm equipment and comment "Thats your biggest backhoe..... hell, weve got spoons bigger than that in the usa" Ummmmm....... Yes applicant, but look at the size of your mouth.. Your president is trying very hard to be early for world war #3, seeing as you were late for the first 2 wars :P G'Day Matey, how ya goin'............. |
