Come to Oz for Melanoma
http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.a...5E3102,00.html
One of the joys of Australia is the melanoma caused by the extreme UV from the sun. According to recent reports not even the slip, slap slop of sun cream will prevent the cancer.
Then we are not reporting it to the docs early enough. Personally I have no idea what is malignant although I had a check up the other month.

Hi Bondipom,
I thought this subject was worthy of further attention, I am someone who already has several moles and melanoma is a concern.
I was talking to an Australian woman this week who told me she had had three moles removed and all were malignant, she was fairly matter of fact about it and has regular checks with a skin specialist. She also said that the specialist said that sun screen doesn't help it just clogs your pores and it is better to keep covered up and to limit exposure to the sun.
On the evening news last week there was an item about how suncream actually incresaes tha rate of cancer as people feel more able to stay in the sun longer.
Adverts on the TV in WA state that 2 out of 3 australians have skin cancer, very scary thought.
While I'm on the subject of health they also appear to have great problems with the levels of allergies they suffer over here. Lots of things to look out for.

Is the increasing allergy thing unique to Oz? I used to work in the health food industry in the UK and allergy products were a boom area.
I was very glad to be out of the industry. Too many hippies and people listening to ambient pan pipes.

I saw that too, but I think it was "affected" not have, which could mean 2 out of 3 have a close friend or family member who has skin cancer. Certainly hope that 2 out of 3 having it is wrong!
Also heard that the majority of skin cancers are non-fatal.
I had a mole removed in the UK in 1995, and was told that there were cell changes and to stay out of the sun.

Do people suffer from hayfever much over there? Speaking as a sufferer myself, is it the same as this country where it's better to be by the coast?

Hay fever is over here. I never suffered in the UK but there are some pollens here that send my nose crazy.
My wife would not mind a ban on farting. I would go to jail for a long time.:scared: :scared:

The National Occupational Health and Safety Commission report
Skin Cancer
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
Australians have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two out of every three Australians who live to the age of 75 can expect to develop some type of skin cancer. For many years Australians thought a good suntan was a sign of a healthy body. The reality is that a good suntan is a sign that you are being exposed to too much UV radiation.

I remember reading somewhere that skin cancer lays dormant in people from childhood and that is the most dangerous time to be exposed to too much sun...is this correct or have i misunderstood something. It was a long time ago, so i might be wrong.

Yes Bondi,
Nancy (the oz woman) told me her specialist said that it is determine by the sun exposure you have had up until the age of 12. She thought she would have been ok given her father was Australian her mother was English, she is now about late 40's early 50's.
We didn't know enough about the potential danger of the sun as children, burnt, put cream, on went out and burnt again the next day.
Good luck with the posting I thought you had a case of poll fever.

Hey bondipom,
Get someone to check your moles regularly, all over.
(That's my excuse for getting close to the wife )

following on from the first 12 years thing - I also read somewhere that apparently for most of us 30 yr + somethings going to migrate to Straya we've got a lot [significant] less chance of developing spots at the same rate as an aussie...as the clock starts ticking then as aposed to when we were 1,2,3 etc.
and most of us will stay out of the sun.
