Default College membership for doctors

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me? I am currently an SHO over in the UK and looking to move out to queensland. On the job front things are starting to look promising. I am now looking more into the training system in australia. When do I apply to join the royal australisian college of physicians? Will I be able to get my year as an SHO accreditated as the first year of basic training?

Cheers for any help

Hi Naomi I am not sure about the answer to your question but have you checked these website?

DoctorConnect
http://www.doctorconnect.gov.au/
A great website with great information.

Australian Medical Council:
http://www.amc.org.au/
It's actually a dreadfully designed website but the information is probably there.

Hiya,

Have been really struggling with the AMC website. They definately need to pay someone to redesign it. I have actually emailed someone from teh college of physicians hoping they can help, have been through the college of physicians website, doctorsconnect and also the AMC, although they give general guidence there appears to be no hard and fast.

Hi Naomi,

What I do know is this:

There is what is called the Competency Authority Scheme which appears to make it easier for UK, USA or Canadian Doctors to go to Australia. The idea was to roll this scheme out throughout Australia, but this has been on the cards for a long time. I believe that only Queensland participate in the scheme at the moment.

From all accounts, and there really isn't very comprehensive information out there, going via this scheme means that you do not have to go through the rigmarole of the full registration.

Here is the page on the dreadful AMC website:
http://www.amc.org.au/competentauth.asp

If you do get some information that actually makes more sense I would really appreciate if you could pass it on.

Cheers

Hiya,

I actually have the AMC stuff figured out! It took me a long time though. Basically there is a check list and if you qualify then you send off proof of your qualification ie for me my UK medical degree and proof that I have worked for one year post grad, and they then verify that you are competant. You then have to complete a supervised period in Australia where someone within the trust you work for will then sign a piece of paper confirming that you have been a competant member of the team and you then will get full registration with the AMC. Ace. Saves loads of money and time for exams!

The bit I'm having trouble with is when to register with the Royal Australasian college of physicians to carry on with training jobs and become qualified to be a reg and specialise!
