Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
Yes, I guess in either country you can shop around for cheaper items.
However, when you both work full time it's nice to be able to do it all under one roof.
I didn't put shampoo etc on because I got bored, it took ages to do
There's no alcohol on the shopping lists because Coles don't do it, and I deliberately left off bananas as i didn't want to skew the results
What I really want is for some clever mathematician type to give an informed view on the comparison

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
Did anyone see the comparison recently of the Australian supermarkets store prices against their online prices?
It was a bit of an eye opener and I think that both Coles and Woolworths were charging more for goods purchased online.

That's why I wanted some feedback about the best way to compare. Exchange rate is clearly not a good way to do it

The online coles shop was using a North Brisbane post code if that helps

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
Loo paper maybe cheaper but it's not such good quality
Keep up the Amazon account as books are stupidly expensive here unless you can get one of the 5 for $25 deals but then they may not be books you'd choose to read! I should really try the ibooks but looking at a computer screen all day I like to read on paper at night, plus a book won't get damaged when I fall asleep reading it! Also I find a lot of the books I like aren't sold here (fluffy chick lit as that's about as much as I can concentrate on these days) so I get all those from Amazon. I miss browsing the book sections in the supermarkets.
As for the UK....well we too had a pretty good life in the UK but there were a lot of things happening to society which we weren't keen on but it's happening here now! Whatever happens in the UK we get it a few years later, there are a lot more stories in the news now about bashings, issues with society etc etc - I think all the Daily Mail journos have come out here! We just wanted to try something different.....and boy has it been different!

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
I think we even had a Coles/Woolies employee posting trying to justify it.
It's all a big ball of meh to me.
When I'm battling some as yet unknown terminal disease at some as yet unknown point in the future at least I will not look back and think 'I'm glad I did that spreadsheet grocery shopping comparison'.
I think I may take a walk, it's brightening up ...

Yup, I heard about that, there was a thread somewhere here.

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
If you have the time & inclination here you can deffo get better deals by going to several different places to get your groceries, esp with the help of the avalanche of junk mail from the retailers advertising what is on offer. Personally tho, & with kids, I would much prefer to go to a giant Tesco where I can get everything in one go, plus have the pharmacy on hand, the clothing & some other smaller shops right there.
In the UK I would also occasionally use market stalls for cheap fruit & veg plus local farm shops for seasonal stuff & to feel saintly that I was buying local! I do miss these options here in Oz but obviously farm shops are not going to work in the suburban sprawl. The markets here are quite good but just have a different vibe.

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
For fun I pulled your numbers into Excel, fixed it up for the major quantity differences (eg BOGOF = divide by 2, multiply price when quantities different). I also put milk in, which seemed to get lost off the Tesco column, and Bolognese sauce off the Coles column.
As a result I get:
Tesco £91.06
Coles $197.61
Converting the Tesco prices
Current Exchange rate: $136.10 31% cheaper in UK

I i think you may find that a true comparison is confused by the non-totally equivalent items, but it's interesting to see where the really overpriced items
are.

Moreover, shouldn't we use the 90 day moving average over the last 2
decades factoring in a standard deviation for regional hub pricing measurements. I'm in my white coat busy correlating the data on two whirring mainframes.

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
Well, there aren't any farms. I think the retailers come up from the coast or down from the mountains but it's not on the farm itself, with a nice tea room as well!! I was probably a bit spoilt at our last location in the UK as it was in Berks so semi-rural with twee farm shops everywhere.

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
I would try to plan my grocery budget to the nearest 5% but I just know there would be something bigger and entirely unexpected arriving that would knock it all into a cocked-hat.
Life is like that.
Hope the back is better soon
