Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
So what? Aussie retailers will adapt and most will survive. Aussie consumers will be better off. What's the problem?
A strong currency forces companies to become more efficient. They can use the strong currency to their advantage by investing in machinery, software etc to make themselves more efficient. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing more to cushion the manufacturing and tourism sectors - more tax on mining would be a very good idea IMO.
There are certain whingers on this board who can't accept that the ex-colony is racing ahead of the mother country. In the good old days they could always say "the weather's better, the houses are bigger, there's more social cohesion but London is the place to go if you really want to succeed". Well it just ain't true anymore.

Australian retail is showing as much sign of adapting as the dodo. Personally I couldn't care less about the supposed two horse race between the UK and it's former colony - I don't intend to return to London or to remain in Oz. I'm grateful to Australia for allowing me to travel back in time 30 years without having to invent a flux capacitor.

Why are they whingers because they don't agree with you ?
Australia isnt racing ahead of the UK in my eyes and no doubt in the eyes of many others.

While retailers are feeling the heat, they are operating in a robust growing economy with low unemployment.
According to the ABS, the retail sector is hardly collapsing:
- The trend estimate rose 0.3% in November 2011. This follows a rise of 0.3% in October 2011 and a rise of 0.3% in September 2011.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate was relatively unchanged (0.0%) in November 2011. This follows a rise of 0.2% in October 2011 and a rise of 0.3% in September 2011

I don't mind people not agreeing with me, but I do object when people are irrational.
By any objective measure, Australia has increased its lead over the UK on a raft of social and economic indicators. That doesn't mean I dismiss other, more subjective, factors which attract people to the UK: history, countryside, proximity to Europe, familiarity etc. In fact, I'm quite attracted to the European lifestyle - although the UK would not be my first pick (more attracted to France myself).
