Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops
When exactly did Australia become so expensive ? Was it 5 years ago or did it start before that ?

Groceries are expensive here but that's only one part of the story
(Decent) Houses in nice areas of the UK are expensive
Many new cars are cheaper here than in the UK - VW for example
I paid $1.80 for a can of coke in Fremantle the other day
I just had a delicious butter chicken curry lunch for $10

Fair enough, but the UK retail industry has also been smashed, but by a poor economy rather than exchange rates. Plenty of big retail businesses over there have gone under or are in big trouble.
Retail is one of those industries that can keep on reinventing itself though, so no shit needs to be given in either country.

If it has to be a UK versus Oz comparison then I'd argue that Aussie retail is in structural decline rather than an economic downturn like the UK's sector. Consumers accustomed to limited choice, high price retail are now far more savvy, setting up US addresses to leapfrog Aussie protectionism and taking advantage of overseas retail for everything

It is what it is. I know how and where to get the best prices where possible. I earn far more here than in the UK. Life's good.

The comments after that story are interesting and paint a very clear picture.
What about deleveraging and consumer conservatism?

If you read the comments from actual consumers following that story they say that far from saving what they don't spend they don't actually have any spare money. The problem with some on here that came here as skilled workers and earn good money that is not the average Australian.

A strong currency forces companies to become more efficient. They can use the strong currency to their advantage by investing in machinery, software etc to make themselves more efficient. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing more to cushion the manufacturing and tourism sectors - more tax on mining would be a very good idea IMO.
There are certain whingers on this board who can't accept that the ex-colony is racing ahead of the mother country. In the good old days they could always say "the weather's better, the houses are bigger, there's more social cohesion but London is the place to go if you really want to succeed". Well it just ain't true anymore.

I don't mind Aussie retailers suffering. Almost all that they sell are imported stuff.
