Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops

And I have to say I can't see a lot in it.

I tried to put in like-for-like using own brand where possible.

My Coles basket came to $202.75
My Tesco basket came to £91.70 although there would be a couple of BOGOF's to come off at checkout.

Interesting, you'd probably beat the meat (sorry) and veg prices in some cases by using the adjacent speicalist butchers and grocers from what i have seen.

The other day we walked around the veg and butchers, checked out the prices of what we wanted then left the dearer stuff in Coles and bought it outside on the way home, took a couple of minutes longer but i can see how once you get used to/ in the swing of it you could save $$ on the weekly shopping

...another option would be Aldi if you are looking for basic's. They have good quality and are well priced.

And don't forget we have ALDI and now Costco (at least in Canberra) which is creating more competition.

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops

Interesting exercise!

Milk, bread and eggs always seem so much more expensive here and when I go back and look at the price of things in ASDA it always seems cheap even doing the sums. Toiletries and make-up are also more expensive here as well, maybe it's because shampoo always seems to come in huge bottles!

As the OP said, meat is usually better bought at the butchers (usually one in the shopping mall) or there are a lot of wholesale meat traders around so best to get a big freezer and buy in bulk. If you live near a market then you can get some good deals on fruit and veg as well, if you have the time to go to individual shops.

The supermarkets have improved a great deal since we moved here 4.5 years ago (maybe something to do with a few Brits at the helm now :D) and some Coles are even selling clothes now.

We don't have an ALDI near us for everyday shopping but we normally go there and stock up on chocolate and it's the only place OH can get grapefruit marmalade!!

Food has gone up a lot since we first started visiting Oz when certainly back then a trolley full of food was cheaper than the UK...foolishly we thought hey lets come and live here and we can work less.........then we arrived and everything went sky-high....ho hum.....

Yes, I guess in either country you can shop around for cheaper items.
However, when you both work full time it's nice to be able to do it all under one roof.

I was impressed that I could get Coles peanut butter with no added sugar and salt quite reasonably. Here in the UK I have to get Whole earth which is pricey. All the others have added sugar.

I was shocked at the price of moist loo paper in Aus, I hope Aldi do it cheaper
However, normal loo roll seems cheaper.

I didn't put shampoo etc on because I got bored, it took ages to do

There's no alcohol on the shopping lists because Coles don't do it, and I deliberately left off bananas as I didn't want to skew the results

What I really want is for some clever mathematician type to give an informed view on the comparison

There isn't a huge amount in it overall, I found fruit and veg to be quite a bit cheaper in the UK. The biggest thing is how much it has all gone up over here, as has been said not that many years ago the difference in prices was huge and now the UK often comes out ahead. That is what surprises many people.

I did think that myself - it took bloody ages!

I am on leave this week and had a houseful of kids today, so I sat and chilled doing this with my cups of tea :p
It was a welcome relief from work, believe me

So converting at the cost of living rate (2.2):

Coles = $202.75
Tesco = $201.74

Can't wait for Tesco to get here and drive down the prices by that final $1 :D

Chris, one of the reasons I spent the time doing this today is because I wanted to make sure I could afford to live in Aus. Obviously there are other factors to look at too :)
I have never understood some of the UK bashing that goes on on this site - I guess because I have a nice life here, plenty of friends, secure jobs etc, and I don't see the crime and anti-social behaviour that others speak of

However, I didn't want to take it on hearsay that COL is now cheaper in the UK. Prices have also risen here and we have felt the effect of this over the past year. I guess it is a global thing. When I first started looking into emigrating, Aus was definitely cheaper and this is clearly no longer the case. I had believed through this site that groceries were more expensive in Aus, but not sure that the evidence bears this out?

There are things not included in these shopping lists that may make a difference.
E.g. I love reading and have an Amazon prime account. I also buy stuff from Ebay as it's so easy here in the Uk and there is so much choice. I'm not sure Aus compares in these areas just yet?

Ah yes that's right you subscribe to this rather odd 2.2 exchange rate :D

Sorry Chris, I forgot I promised to stop using the rate worked out using average salaries and mathematics and use the one you plucked out of your... :p:lol:

Re: Coles vs Tesco - I have done online shops

There is absolutely no doubt that the COL here has increased dramatically in recent times, housing, food, utilities, fuel etc. It isn't the cheap place to live that it used to be.
When I read some of the UK bashing I do wonder if they are talking about some sort of alternative UK that I have never been to. We also came from a nice area and will in fact be returning to a very nice area. If I lived in a bad area in either country my opinion would obviously be different.
From my research when I did my reccie back to the UK last year is that groceries are cheaper in the UK and there are far more deals and the numerous BOGOF offers make it even cheaper.
The way I look at it is that both countries can and do offer a good quality of life and it just comes down to what you want out of life.
