If you live in a flat would it be worth contacting the landlord to deal with this problem?

I'm just asking..... Some one will have an answer.. Coz I'm certainly no rental expert based on my own experience...

Its just that if you bomb your place etc etc etc andnthe buggers above, below, beside you have them and dont do anything They're like Arnie.. ""I'll be back"

My landlord (agency) hasn't been able to let me know wich one is my gas meter or if I can open the kitchen's windows.

I really believe (maybe naively) that they come from outside but I have to be proactive with this before start living in cockroachland...

We called our REA told them we have lots of cockroaches in the house & it's not acceptable they send a pest man around & sprayed the whole house as it was old house just like yours, but Sydney is famous for it's giant cockroaches by the way.:lol:

roaches are attracted to heat and humidity. it's important to adequately ventilate your flat.

winter is coming soon. roaches and flies will disappear.

the best defence is fly screens on windows and doors, yes they do fly in barrier spray is also handy. :thumbsup:


another good defence is to live very high up they dont seem to bother those units!

the first cockroach in Oz I met was one of the large ones it flew in the window landed on my thigh and crawled straight up the leg of my shorts the screams and jumping about scared the neighbours lol

unfortunately roaches are what you het in earmer climates. when i lived in bermuda island my canadian friend saw roaches for the very first time in his life.

Well, I have to challenge this one as I'm originally from a south American (tropical and hot) country and I had NO roaches whatsoever comparing to this..

It is not the big ones you need to worry about actually, if you only have the odd massive cocky then that isn't so bad. This just usually means that one has managed to get inside through an open window or door.

It is those smaller German Cockys that are the problem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cockroach. They get between the walls and in the electrics and breed, no matter how much bombing, baiting or spraying you do they will ALWAYS come back. Someone could drop a nuclear bomb on your house and the little bastards would still come crawling out of the crater.

The problem with rentals in Sydney is that the nature of renting means that over say a period of 5 or 6 years people come and go and usually bring in a new fridge, washing machine and other house hold items, the problem is these little critters get moved around also, often as little eggs.

We have the odd big one in this house but none of the smaller Germans one thankfully. We used to rent a unit a while back that when you went for a glass of water in the middle of the night and you flicked the kitchen light on all you would see is small Cockroaches making a dash for under the fridge, washing machine and dishwasher. The problem with a block of units also is that unless everyone else in the block bombs at the same time then it will last around 2 weeks before they come back.

If you have the German Cockroaches you are either going to spend a hell of a lot of money fighting and probably getting very frustrated or you can learn to live with it.

Be careful when you move you don't take any with you, or eggs, especially if you are moving to a nice new place that doesn't have any at all.

We had an infestation when we first moved into our current apartment. I rang the real estate we rented it from and they just sent a pest control man who sprayed poison in the usual places. 3 months later the only roaches I see are dead ones that have tried to break in.

I am extremely repulsed by both the german cockroach and the nasty big ones that just seem to adore humidity.

I live in NYC and once had a problem with the occasional big ones making themselves at home and scaring the crap out of me. We call them Waterbugs over here, I don't know what they're called in Oz. Point is, it's a big project for me to have them removed as I tremble and am sickened to my stomach by their repulsive sight with a severe case of anxiety. Thank goodness that I found the source of the problem and had a plumber come up and seal the hole straight to hell that was allowing them access to my premises, and since then, I haven't seen them anymore.

Now, I keep my apartment clean and don't have any holes in the wall and have not seen any cockroach or waterbug in ages. If I continue with my same behavior, will I not have this problem in Oz, or does it not matter how clean you are? :(

A woman from Sydney who used to work with us told me that she saw them walking on the streets along with the people - eek! I can't even imagine the site!

I think most people will see the odd cockroach in Sydney. We don't get many, maybe I see one a month or something like that, usually already dead as the cat takes care of it for me. Never seen any walking down the street. :)

When I bought my present house it was roach heaven, both German and American, with the German roaches so bad that they were running over the work surfaces in broad daylight.

I had the pest guy spray the house for roaches and one visit was all it took to sort out the buggers, I now got the house sprayed every year. My guy charges $150 and personally I think that's cheap insurance.

If you believe that the roaches are coming in from outside have a look around the outside of the building for old water gullies or manhole covers. The big American roaches love these places, I had three of the old gullies on my property and would often get a fly-in roach, my plumber advised me to cover the tops of the gullies with fly screen I glued if down with builders adhesive ), and I haven't seen one since........touch wood.

You havent seen once since because the roaches in your house now have the measure of you..... And have outsmarted you completely.... They're still there

Like most other people I can't stand cockroaches.

As well as making a filthy mess they can carry diseases including tuberculosis, cholera and dysentery.
