Hi,

Not wanting to hijack the thread but I have a similar question.

Wood furniture. I've been given the impression that taking wood to Aus is a bit of a nightmare, is that correct? Do we need to get it certified as safe or something?

Ta

GB
We ship goods stacked on wooden pallets in containers to OZ, NZ, China and Argentina who all have laws about wood imports.
USA and Canada will probably introduce them too.

The pallets have to be either made of tanalised timber, heat treated or the whole container has to be fumigated. Which depends on the destination.

Not sure how this translates over to personal items and furniture but make sure you check as almost certainly there will be extra costs involved somewhere.

Think fumigating the container costs us about GBP 200.

Yes - I took wicker items. And some seagrass baskets. I know quarantine opened the wicker stuff as it was re-taped when it arrived. I cant remember if they charged for treatment.

I don't even think Australia produces it's own wicker - i.e. it's all imported anyway...so they will let it in to the country - but supposedly only if treated.

A friend in Oz bought a wicker basket from Myer (big Aussie dept store for those who haven't come across it). When she moved it a few months later it had completely disintegrated in the bottom - because of bugs. It must have been been imported from Asia like that!!

Reading one of Hev's threads today, she had 2 wicker baskets destroyed by AQIS - $55 each, just for destruction!

Regarding fridge & TV.

I haved just had a email from some friends who have been in Oz for 12 mths. They took their fridge & it is still going strong. They took their TV & bought an Oz VCR & it works fine (without vcr it only picked up SBS)

We are trying to whittle stuff down from 3/4 of 40ft container to a 20ft - so hard to do & when do you get rid of it - need it until we sell the house ( & move in with mum if timing not quite right) but then it is hectic when selling & will we have time to take to a booter or try & sell in the newspaper. Decisions decisions eh?

On the subject of washing machines - take or buy a new front loader to take with you - the top loaders are c**p - we could not get some marks out of clothes while we were there on holiday but when we got back - one wash in our machine & presto! Not sure if it is the washing powder also?!! We wrecked a couple of bits in the washer while we were there.

cheers pockygoes

Hiya Pockygoes
Have you ever tried selling on ebay? We got £30.00 for a cooker which we would have just taken up the dump. Perhaps you could have a good look at the site, decide what you want to sell. You can sell things over a time period - e.g. a week. Then you could get it to coincide with when you go. You could even write up the descriptions and have the photos ready, so as you get nearer the date, all you have to remember is to stick them on.
Good luck,
Larissa
For some of the tat etc. they often have free advertising days, if you can hang on to your stuff.

Random thoughts (I best at those according to the wife)

Front loaders are better for clothes (less wear) and use less water. In WA you get a rebate ($150) if you buy AAA rated or above. Ours is a 5.5 kg Whirlpool retailing at $775 before rebate and discount (always ask for cash price including using bank cards ) Top loaders are becoming less popular although my SIL says she "doesn't trust them". Married into a mad family :scared:

All white goods, try and ship them if they are working OK. UK fridges make good beer fridges if nothing else. We bought a side by side 614L Samsung with water and ice for $2640.

We were told wicker and rattan were definite no-nos (Doree Bonner) also cork on weighing scales. Missus says she wasn't bothered about taking that anyway, can't think why

Just a thought but if you like clothes or need business wear. Buy some new stuff before you get here. The Aussie stuff is not much cop and dammed expensive.

Must agree about front loaders they are far superior to Oz top loaders, they seem to basically add stains and pull the clothes apart, give me a good old front loader anyday, also going to take a few extension leads so that the dishwasher, fridge and washing machine only need one change of plug rather than 3. We were not going to take anything but a trip back in December changed our minds and we are taking everything its is so expensive out in Oz once you are earning and spending the dollar.

On another completely different note:

Also expensive were kids toys, dressing up clothes $50 dollars for a spiderman suit you could buy over here for £10, books also expensive, everyday items such as we paid $7 for a box of plasters, dont convert it you wont once you live there.

Still can't wait to go though!!!

V good point. You'll probably also need to buy some Aussie ones as they don't put as many power points as they do in the UK.

Bear in mind you have to be careful about the amount of load you put on the socket. I'm sure a kindly sparky could explain it better than me. As an example we can't run the kettle and toaster at the same time.

Moral : Make sure you get overload protected power boards.

Have seen plenty of frontloaders here for similar prices to the uk, also dryers seem pretty cheap if you need one.
We were told that painted wicker was Ok, stuffs in customs as we speak so cant confirm that yet.
One thing that really seems expensive to buy are books, there are libraries though!
