Default Claiming our tax back (paid too much on arrival)

Hello,

When we first arrived dopes in payroll made a mix up with TFN and we ended up paying way too much tax.
At the time they told us we would recieve a cheque in July and being stressed with a big move and kids we didnt question it.

Well Ive just contacted them today about it and they were very unhelpful. Basically one line email saying go look at tax website. No name of the website or anything!

So folks, how do I get the tax we overpaid back?
What forms do I need to fill in and when?
Any other info appreciated.

We need WA tax office and forms.

Tax office website is www.ato.gov.au . If you paid too much tax then you should get it back after you file your tax return - end of the tax year is 30th June, and you'll have to file a tax return soon after that.

And for others reading this virtually everyone in Aus HAS to do a tax return every year, there aren't many exceptions.

Thanks for links/info.

So we need to do this every year, even if we are not expecting a refund. We have not been told this by employer.

What sort of info is needed, and is it easy to do yourself?

You have to do a tax return every year. You can either do it yourself (it's not that difficult ) or pay some dude about $85 to do it for you - you'll find these guys all over the shopping centres from July to October (ish).

You can do it online, usually takes about half an hour or so if your financial affairs are straightforward. You'll get a notice (called a Group certificate) from your employer telling you how much you have earned in the current tax year, that arrives very early in July. Once you have that you can either do it online or - as Wayne puts it - "pay some dude about $85 to do it for you ".

Just got a part time job that will earn me about $3600 up till end of tax year. This will be my only earned income since arriving in Aus Nov 07. I realise I will pay tax on this but can I claim it all back when I lodge a tax return in July ?

You get a prorated tax free amount - so the full year is $6k and you will get an allowance which is prorated. You just put down all your income - including any interest from bank accounts etc and they will work out what you owe them. You may get it all back if you dont have any other income to declare. Read all about it here

The 18 year old will need to do one, definitely, and if both parents are working they need to do one. Not sure if one doesn't work though

is the link you need.

If, for example, the wife doesn't work for all or part of the tax year, the husband can claim her as a dependant and get a decent tax return I don't know if the non-worker still has to complete a return though. I'd suspect that they would anyway.
