Citizenship Test!

Who has done the test?

My name is Molly and I am a year 12 student at a high school in Byron Bay.

For my class Society and Culture I have to do a major project. The topic I have chosen is the Australian Citizenship Test and I was wondering if any one who has done it can help me by answering these questions?

It would be so helpful.
Thank you!

• Where did you come from?

• How long have you lived in Australia?

• Did you find the citizenship test easy or hard?

• What factors do you think helped you/disadvantaged you?

• Do you think the test asked you questions that have helped you to become a better citizen?

• From the types of questions asked of you, and your knowledge of Australian society in general, what do you think Australian values are?

• Do you think the test discriminates against certain groups? If so, how?

• Did the revision for the rest and the test in itself give you a better insight into Australian society and culture or do you think it was a waste of time?

• What do you think would be a good way of measuring the worth of a potential citizen?

:)

• Where did you come from?

Southern England in the UK

• How long have you lived in Australia?

2 years almost exactly

• Did you find the citizenship test easy or hard?

I found it easy but some of the questions required a bit of extrapolation from the booklet

• What factors do you think helped you/disadvantaged you?

The booklet definitely helped

• Do you think the test asked you questions that have helped you to become a better citizen?

Not necessarily better but certainly more aware about the history, culture and values of Australia. It helped me to understand how Australia is the country it is today

• From the types of questions asked of you, and your knowledge of Australian society in general, what do you think Australian values are?

Egalitarianism, or more precisely defined, equality, tolerance and fairness (to name a few)

• Do you think the test discriminates against certain groups? If so, how?

No, I don't

• Did the revision for the rest and the test in itself give you a better insight into Australian society and culture or do you think it was a waste of time?

Yes and I found it fascinating

• What do you think would be a good way of measuring the worth of a potential citizen?

A measure of their intent to integrate successfully (over a period of time) into Australian society (not blindly though) and also exposing their long terms plans for Australia and where they think they might be 10 years from now?

Re: Citizenship Test!

• Where did you come from?

Originally Northern England but also the South and Midlands

• How long have you lived in Australia?

3 years next week

• Did you find the citizenship test easy or hard?

I had to think hard about 40% of the questions though I finished really quickly with unexpectedly good results

• What factors do you think helped you/disadvantaged you?

Coming from a place with the same language, and similar government helped, would have struggled if hadn't read the book

• Do you think the test asked you questions that have helped you to become a better citizen?

Probably not, I think those who want to take advantage still will and others who feel a great loyalty to the country still will too

• From the types of questions asked of you, and your knowledge of Australian society in general, what do you think Australian values are?

fairness, equality, decency, loyalty, being almost horizontally laid back on occasion (this last wasn't in the test)

• Do you think the test discriminates against certain groups? If so, how?

It's more difficult for those with weaker English language skills or without any knowledge of government, but I believe it's intended this way

• Did the revision for the rest and the test in itself give you a better insight into Australian society and culture or do you think it was a waste of time?

Absolutely - I loved learning more about the history of the country, eg. where the term digger came from, the first settlers, etc. I also thought it was a small effort that reminded me how important the committment was to me

• What do you think would be a good way of measuring the worth of a potential citizen?

Sorry this one's too hard for me! I just wonder how many of us would find the choice so easy if we had to give up our original citizenship

Thank you!

• Where did you come from?
West Midlands - UK

• How long have you lived in Australia?
2 and a half years

• Did you find the citizenship test easy or hard?
easy

• What factors do you think helped you/disadvantaged you?
I could read and I read the booklet !

• Do you think the test asked you questions that have helped you to become a better citizen?
No because the values of UK and Aus are similar, but would be helpful for people from other countries perhaps

• From the types of questions asked of you, and your knowledge of Australian society in general, what do you think Australian values are?
Everyone having a say and fair treatment for all (apparently !)

• Do you think the test discriminates against certain groups? If so, how?
No

• Did the revision for the rest and the test in itself give you a better insight into Australian society and culture or do you think it was a waste of time?
Yes

• What do you think would be a good way of measuring the worth of a potential citizen?
No idea

:)

Hope this helps

• Where did you come from?
London, UK

• How long have you lived in Australia?
1 year 11 months when I did the test

• Did you find the citizenship test easy or hard?
easy

• What factors do you think helped you/disadvantaged you?
I read the booklet a couple of times and also discussions at work with Aussies who didn't know the answers

• Do you think the test asked you questions that have helped you to become a better citizen?
No but it gave me some more history on Australia

• From the types of questions asked of you, and your knowledge of Australian society in general, what do you think Australian values are?
I don't think the test really helped this at all as Aus is pretty similar to the UK in general society, the "mateship" phrase is a bit corny though

• Do you think the test discriminates against certain groups? If so, how?
No it doesn't discriminate

• Did the revision for the rest and the test in itself give you a better insight into Australian society and culture or do you think it was a waste of time?
Probably a waste of time, the test took me about 2 minutes then I wasted an hour waiting for DIAC to sort their paperwork out.

• What do you think would be a good way of measuring the worth of a potential citizen?
Dunno, difficult to say I guess if anything I would say putting down roots in Australia and calling Australia home
