My Partner Matt has received the first stage of his Temporary Spouse (De-Facto Partner) Visa and we leave for Brisbane in April! Then in 2 years time he'll receive his PR. Does anybody know if he can apply for citizenship after these first 2 years? Most things I've read say he has be Permanent Resident for 2 years, but I read somewhere there is an exception when he's the spouse of a PR. I'm a PR, and we'd really like to get our citizenship as soon as we can, and do the ceremony together!

At the moment - no. He'll need to wait 2 years to get PR, and then another two to get citizenship. Only in exceptional circumstances can it be done any sooner - read form 1027i.

The Government has proposals that might mean that part of the time on a temp visa would count (announced mid 2004), but the new Minister for Citizenship hasn't indicated whether he will or will not proceed with these.

I guess you are aware PR is due 2 years after application, not visa grant.
