Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?
Several threads in here over the past week or so have shown many people (myself included) are concerned that they may be affected.
Some people, such as Jeremy have suggested those potentially affected should write to their federal MP to express those concerns. So, who has written so far? A thread showing those who have written could be useful, since they can maybe help out those who dont feel so confident in writing, and also a way of judging just how many people on this forum feel they may be affected. Have you written to your MP? 1. I've written already 2. I am going to write 3. Doesnt affect me 4. Doesnt bother me |
Re: Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?
I am going to write but could not find any way to contact MPs in the sites Jeremy gave me
Any ideas? |
Re: Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?
I've just sent off an email to my MP this evening.
I did a search for "federal MP" and found a site where I could search on my postcode for my electorate, then to the MPs homepage with his email address. Elaine M :) |

Re: Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?
I am in the process of composing a letter tonight (now i can concentrate without MIL asking for small cups of tea every 2 minutes.) The Bloke is also writing to his MP as the spouse of an emigrant.
Nothing against the holders of Skills visas, but the timelines wind me up. My timeline: Prospective Spouse Visa granted May 2003 Entered Australia November 2003 Married January 2004 Temporary residence granted February 2004 PR expected February 2006 Citizenship now possible -earliest date eligible February 2009 The timeline of a Skills Visa holder: Skills Visa granted to applicant and family May 2003 Entered Australia as Permanent Residents November 2003 Eligible-& planning to apply-for citizenship November 2005 Permanent return to the UK scheduled January 2006 |

Elaine M :) I hope that we can be successful in our claim because I insist that it is a very unfair situation if the proposed law does not consider the situation of the existing PRs. As soon as I receive an answer (if I receive one), I will post it here Cheers |

" as it will give the Minister something easy to respond with. The Minister would say that someone intending to return to the UK permanently on that timescale would be ineligible for citizenship on the grounds of not intending to continue to live in Australia or maintain a 'close and continuing association with Australia'. Discouraging such behaviour is also part of the reason the residence requirement is going up. Also - something like that suggests every skills visa holder is planning to return to the UK after citizenship - patently untrue. Your points about different timelines are very valid but are best left without any additional insinuations. Jeremy |
Re: Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?
Thanks Jeremy, point taken - though I guess he - like the rest of us - knows how common this is. How many posters on this forum are just "sitting it out" waiting for their citizenship so they can leave? (rhetorical question, & please noone take offence!)

Re: Citizenship changes: who has written to their MP?

Any ideas? You need to look harder: Find your electorate and MP's name: http://www.aec.gov.au/esearch/main.htm You may need to call the AEC if you live right on an electorate border. Contact details: http://www.aph.gov.au/library/tutorial/contact.htm Jeremy |
