Cigarette butts start 7% of bushfires

February 21, 2005 - 6:04AM

Environment groups say cigarette butts are the cause of seven per cent of Australia's bushfires.

As part of a campaign to highlight the problem of cigarette-related fires, three environment groups have joined a major supermarket chain to distribute half a million pocket ashtrays to encourage smokers to bin their butts.

Anyone who starts a bushfire through a cigarette butt should be executed.

What causes the other 93% and how can we enforce a ban on lightning in public places?

fire bugs - kids, and nutters. Most fires here are started on purpose, very few are natural.

How do you enforce.. don't know. Most national parks have "no open fires" policy. lol . try telling that to people who build a big camp fire out of the wood, and don't even put it out when they leave, because they know nobody is around to stop them.

I can tell you straight away, the fires we have had in my area are kids wanting a bush fire .I'd strangle the little f's if I ever get my hands on one.

I was impressed with the "Bin your butts" campaign in Byron.
They advertise on signs, "Free! Bin your butts!" pocket ashtrays available in all pubs. It turns out this free ashtray is nothing more than an old 35mm film case with a BYB logo sticker on the side.

Great idea, simple, cheap and effective.

They need to enforce the laws here that they already have. Try Singapore for smoking. I have never ever chucked a butt here in Aus , it's second nature to me to look for a bin with an ashtray ,because of the hangover from Sing.

What can they do here :

Provide bins with ashtrays ( all bins and not just a few)
and enforce the law. Get serious about it.

It is no good making laws if they are not enforced.
