Default China Eastern Airlines

Hi All

Been on the net looking for the cheapest possible flights to Melbourne for next June. Me and Charlotte are planning a holiday and a bit of a reccie, even though not made the application yet, but be good to see the areas we like (Williams Town. From last trip). Also gives Charlotte a chance to see her Uncle.
Anyway I digress the cheapest flight I saw was with China Eastern Airways £569 return. But couldn't see the connections. Charlotte thinks it maybe a bit of a bus service ie make 5 different stops before it gets to Melbourne.
Anyone heard of or used this airline?

Cheers

Your flight trip will have one stop on Shanghai - which is by all accounts not the nicest place to stopover, as to what the flight is like, your guess is a good as mine, but no doubt for a few dollars more you could fly with Cathay or another airline that you've heard of!

If Shanghai is a stopover then you should make the most of it, its not that bad a place, we have lived there for 3 years! But seriously, China Eastern are ok, as long as you know you get what you pay for. If it does include a stopover in Shanghai, and money is an option, then you are probably better off paying more money for a more direct flight, as Shanghai can be pretty expensive for hotels etc. Also, it does take 10 hours to get from Shanghai to Melbourne, so if time is a factor, then bear this in mind too.
Just my 2p.

Probably you will know that airfares with all airlines go up on 1st July. Over the course of Sept to Jan the different airlines release their specials for travel up to 30th June. Emirates have released some of their specials. Malaysia have started releasing some - Perth only so far and other airlines will follow. China Eastern got in early (who would travel with them if they didn't get in before the other airlines?) and this is why they would come up as the cheapest. My advice is to wait until more airlines release their specials for June. We always travel in June and I'm waiting for better airlines and deals.

It is important to sign up for weekly newsletters from the likes of Quest, Travelbag, Travelmood, Airline Network etc and to read the travel section in the weekend papers so you get in quickly because I know from experience how fast the cheap seats sell and of course they only make so many available. One year for example Emirates released their specials at the weekend and by Monday they were sold out for the last week of June - a lot of people try 30th then work back a day at a time!

We booked in Jan this year for June travel and got under £500 Manchester-Melbourne with one stop in KL which is infinitely better than travelling China Easter. Emirates have some reasonable fares but I know for a fact that June 30th and June 29th 'cheapies' are already sold out (Manchester and Glasgow anyway).

BTW, co-incidentally I'm from Williamstown and we return there each year for 4 or 5 weeks hols, late June to early Aug. I posted some Williamstown photos in a Melbourne beaches and another Melbourne thread a few days ago.

And I'll be b****y annoyed if you pinch the 2 cheap seats we are after for 30th or 29th June.

Hi Oztennis

When I went to Melbourne last year we flew with emirates but we had to go at the start of August and that cost £875. Might not have read your post properly but who did you see the £500 fare with?

Williamstown is gorgeous. Me and Charlotte love all the little coffee and Ice cream shops they have along the harbour and the view of the Melbourne Sky line is fantastic.

Don't worry we won't steal your seats looking to fly out on 16th june for 3 weeks. Last year could only go gor 2 weeks and it wasn't long enough.

Does that price include UK airport taxes ? I'd double check since that would make it under £400 plus tax which doesnt sound right. Singapore is doing Brisbane for £500 plus tax at the moment which is a darn sight nicer.

Check out all airlines at www.airlinequality.com - Its the top site for checking and researching airlines. In the meantime here's a picture of the seat China use in economy..

We flew Malaysia on 29th June this year (£492 each including taxes which is the lowest fare we've had on about 15 flights!) We actually finish work on 30th June next year so have to rely on unpaid leave to get flights on that day or the day before, leave any earlier and it is cheaper to pay the higher fare on 1st July. I'll let you go on 16th.

When I priced Emirates recently, 30th June full, some seats on 29th, I discovered that the taxes have doubled from last year so fares will inevitably be a bit higher. Emirates have a fuel surcharge now of over £60 to add to the airport taxes.

Williamstown is great as you say. We're fortunate to have a place on The Strand with those views you see in the photos. A more modest establishment than the $2.6 mill house I hasten to add - a townhouse near to the Anchorage restaurant. You will be amazed at the difference around there when you return. They are putting in a huge marina behind The Anchorage. A couple of photos of the work underway attached.

Emirates are quoting £500 plus taxes for 29th June. As explained in another post though the airport taxes and fuel charges comes to £110 to £120, depending on which UK airport you go from. There's no way I'd not go on Emirates and travel China Eastern to save £50 or £60.

We paid £500 per head return with Cathay flying out in the traditionally expensive xmas period. I think I'd rather walk than fly China Eastern :scared:

You must have arrived after 25th Dec to get this price?? :scared:

When we flew Cathay we got a nice upgrade from cattle class to business class from Manchester to HK. Later on I discovered the difference between economy and business on that one sector was more than we paid return!!

I asked a travel agent specialising in Oz flights about the cheapest way to get there. She told me China Eastern but told me that I wouldn't really want to go with them. I can't remember the reason but it might be their safety record!!

I still reckon Malaysia will eventually come in cheaper than China Eastern (they're doing Perth £499 inc taxes for June) and only 1 stop, much better food and service, more leg room, better safety record, get there many hours quicker etc.

Having flown with many of them, OzT's ranking of airlines, to Melbourne, is - Emirates, Malaysia, Lauda (now Austrian), Cathay, Singapore, Qantas and BA in that order.
