Childrens allowance
 

Hey all

This might sound like a stupid question in fact i think i already know the answer. But when you move to Aus do you still get your allowance for the kids from the country you move from?? My oh's friend said you do but i think she is talking through her hole;) Anyway just thought i would ask and see if i can win my bet:D

i think you get a type of family allowance in oz though.

Unfortunately it stops. Just been onto website (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/...ct-payment.htm) and copied the following:

Changes that may stop entitlement
In certain circumstances we'll stop paying Child Benefit. This may be because of:

changes that affect you
changes that affect your child
Changes that affect you
We may stop paying you Child Benefit if you:

leave your family home and stop paying money for your child
leave the UK permanently
leave the UK temporarily for more than eight weeks - or more than 12 weeks because you or a member of your family is ill, or died
stop making contributions - of at least as much as the current Child Benefit - for a child who doesn't live with you
start getting paid by a local authority - or in Northern Ireland a Health and Social Services Board or Trust - for a child you're looking after
have your immigration status changed by the Home Office
or your partner starts paying social security contributions to a
country outside the UK

Hope this helps. Bit of a bummer really, we're going on a 457 and were hoping we would still get it.

Is a family entitledto claim any child allowance once in OZ, we're going on a 136 visa, but our daughter will be 16 in Sept, so not sure what age this sort of thing goes up to in Oz, anyone any advice?:confused:

Hi

As far as I know you don't get children's allowance in Oz but once you have PR you get a discount on childcare.

I heard (not from a reliable source though) that you can claim it for 6 months when you leave the country.

Suspension of payment

Where a question arises as to whether the conditions for the receipt of Child Benefit are fulfilled, and initial enquiries fail to establish continuing entitlement, payment may be suspended in whole or in part until the question has been decided.

This will be done for example if there is reason to believe that:

* either the customer or child is no longer alive, or is not resident at the given address;
* the child is no longer living with the customer;
* the customer or child has left the State;
* the child, being over 16 years of age, is no longer in full-time education or incapacitated.

You can claim family allowance in Oz. Have a look on the centerlink website, all the info is on there. How much you get depends on your earnings.

Wasn't there the case of the romanians coming over (to Ireland) and registering for the dole and childrens allowance and going back to romania and getting this money every month in to their bank account which would be a lot in romania. This I am afraid stuffed it up for the rest of us because they got caught although they got away with it for a few years. The government changed their system after this.

To those who don't know, we in Ireland get 332 euros child benefit per month per child from the government regardless of whether you are a millionaire or an ordinary joe soap.

We also get a very generous 6 months maternity leave which when added on to your annual leave and bank holidays and days due can sometimes add up to 8 months plus.

Aarrgghh!!! Why are we leaving???????:curse:

BTW what is the maternity leave in OZ, I am hearing so many conflicting stories. Is it up to the employer there. Heard its not good.:thumbdown:

Are you talking about UK Child Benefit or something in Oz? If you mean the UK I think you need to write to them.
