Question Child benefit NZ

I know they have an income based child benefit in NZ but what I dont know is whether new migrants can claim it at all. I know to gain citizenship you have to support yourselves ie stay in full time employment and are unable to claim unemployment benefits etc which is fine but does this extend to other benefits such as child benefit.

When we got PR we had to sign to say we wouldn't claim benefit for two years (i.e. we could support ourselves...) except in dire circumstances. I'd imagine that means "all" benefits. (But I could be wrong! )

Hi. I'm fairly sure you can claim the child benefit if you are working. It's not actually a 'free' benefit but a tax credit (at least that's my understanding) so just reduces the tax burden for the employed. The reason I think this is because we checked out kindergarten subsidies which I think work the same way, ie they are tax credits as opposed to handouts.
