Default Child benefit etc ......

Hi does anyone know if you are entitled to child benefit or equivalent if you come to Oz on a Nz passport. Or do you have to apply for a visa or wait a certain amount of time. Cheers

check this out mate http://www.centrelink.gov.au/interne..._residence.htm

It states some NZ residents are entitled to it if they obtain a perm Aus visa or if they are the holder of a special category visa – that is someone who arrived on a New Zealand passport

check it out mate

But the Centrelink site says "Special Category Visa", not everyone with a NZ passport. http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/17nz.htm

Not really, the Wiki article you linked to does say "no right to claim most Centrelink (welfare) payments " . which is true. Child Benefit may be treated differently - same as for most PR holders, they can claim child benefit, as I understand it, but not the majority of other Centrelink payments for the first two years.

Any person with a NZ passport who is allowed by Immigration to enter Australia will automatically have the "Special Category Visa".

They have access to Medicare and certain Centrelink benefits such as Family Tax Benefit (provided they meet the other conditions for FTB, e.g. income limits).

OK thanks for all the replies. Something to think about if we decide to give OZ a go in the future. Quite like the idea of spending some time in Oz but not sure I can be motivated enough to re-apply completely from scratch again.

Make sure you do your home work you will not have access to citizenship and very limited social security see http://www.specialcategoryvisa.com/subclass444/

.
NZ passport holders don't get the SCV if they have another visa (permanent or temporary), or if they are one of the small number covered by the special purpose visa program (including diplomats and some air crew).
