Yes Australia does have a form of child benifit payed as a tax reduction, I guess the amount must depend on your earnings and number of childern.

dont know about the whole of aus but i do know that in queensland you get $3,000 a year per child.
i have three kids and was getting $9,000 a year.alot more than the uk eh?

As a guide, a family with one child, under 13, and only one income of about $45k will get $60 per week benefit direct into your bank account, paid fortnightly. If that income goes above $103,332 then no benefit is payable.
The benefit can be paid annually at the end of the year, through a tax rebate if you prefer.
It's the same rate thoughout the country.

I was advised that it is payable on arrival, providing a PR visa is in issue
