Do you have to cancel your child benefit allowance here in the uk when you leave for Aus. Im sure someone said you are still aloowed to claim it but this seems abit weird to me.

I think you are only allowed to still claim if you are only going over temporary, up to 18mnths I think, but if you are going permanently I think you would have to inform them and it would stop. I am ringing to inform them just before we go
but Im no expert... just had to inform them that my son ryan has been kicked out of college so as he is 16yr and no longer in full time education his benefit will stop ... but not until after xmas I was told...I thought it would be immediately

The wife's been ringing ALL day today and got precisely no where with them. All they do is keep giving her other numbers to try ringing????
In the end she just left the details with them and said to them
"I've told you when my daughter and I leave the country......you sort it cos I've got enough to do!!"

Good on 'er

In short - Yes you do!

You can leave it for a bit but I ended up paying back the overpayment!

Some people I know haven't and have got away with it so far but I'd be having nightmares about hell and damnation if it was me.

Yes it does stop! You should remember to let the Inland Revenue know you are going as we got a nice surprise by way of a refund. A bit of a first for us with the Inland Revenue.

Re: child benefit

Tell them you are leaving before you go and any new bank details. They give you 2 months payments, then they stop it and make any adjustments. I got a letter from them too, all very efficient.

Also make sure you leave it vague about going overseas temporary as if you say you are permanently leaving I think you don't get anything.

Every few quid matters!
