Chiko Rolls ???

Battered Chiko Roll fights to survive

JOHN Joannou knows a thing or two about Chiko Rolls and the public's continuing demand for fried food.

The Parramatta takeaway store owner dunks, fries and then drains battered products of all sorts - to go with the 150kg of chips he sells every week.

But Chiko Rolls, battered savs, potato scallops and other fried morsels are firmly in the sights of a conglomeration of western Sydney councillors.

 Err.... what the hell are these foods, has anyone actually heard of them before? Are they only sold in New South Wales?? Or have I gone crazy.

You can get them in Queensland apparently, can't tell you what they are cos I've never had one, but I do remember being told years ago that UK service stations were pathetic cos they didn't sell them, so they must be something amazing!

Battered savs are like battered sausages (you know, the staple of many a chippy in the UK) but have a saveloy in them rather than a sausage, and a potato scallop is a slice of potato, coated in batter and deep fried.

Growing up in the NE of England, it would be a weird chippy that didn't do potato scallops. Our local chippy used to do a refinement of the idea too, and had a slice of fish on top of a slice of potato, which was battered and deep fried - this was commonly referred to as a 'dab'

It did confuse me terribly when I found out that scallops and dabs were really something else completely!!

They're feral. They're small versions of those poo on a stick things you get at shows with a blob of tomato ketchup on the end.

I need a savaloy now, it's been ages ...

I will also get my first Dagwood Dog this year, as this will be the first, and last, time I visit The Ekka.

That's them, Dagwood Dog. However I prefer my description better  Seriously though, save your money. Take it from me, you'll hate it. Let the wife take the daughter and just stay at home. They can bring you a Dorothy the Dinosaur show bag back. That's all you need.

Chiko Rolls are not Dagwood Dogs, they're like a big spring roll with a with a thicker kind of pastry around them and great for fighting off rampant camels (cross threading here).

Dorothy is old hat maaaaaan, move with times, we are into proper dinosaurs these days

I hear they have a bar at The Ekka so it won't all be bad. Just need 3 weeks off work to recover from the 'flu I'll contract now.
