Chickenpox...Aargh!
:(
Evening All - Well I have just had my Mother's Day ruined - eldest has gone down with chickenpox today and we are due to fly out to do a fact finding visit to Oz a week on Tuesday. Just have to wait for the youngest to go down with it now and my week will be complete. Can anyone offer any advice about flying / not flying with chickenpox? Or any good coverall foundation...perhaps???? We have got a four week trip planned.. the thought of having to cancel it and re arrange everything just fills me with horror :scared: Any advice / comments gladly welcome Heather |

Hope all the spots reach that attractive scabby stage really quickly and then you should be ok. Good luck Binbird |
Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
Many Thanks Binbird!
That has cheered me up a bit. :o Hopefully my son should be delightfully scabby by then, but might leave it til the last minute before a visit to the docs just to give it the best chance poss. Think I will contact the airline incognito as a hyperthetical question of course!!! With a bit of luck our little girl will have only picked it up today and so shouldn't show spots for a couple of weeks, by which time we should be on a beach...with a bit of luck. Heather  |
Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
If your child/children are still at the stage where they are contagious, DO NOT FLY! I don't want to ruin your trip, but please, have a thought for the other travellers. They don't want to catch it.

Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
Our youngest child came down with chicken pox when we were in Oz and we ended up having to rearrange our travel home. We had to go to the GP who checked him over really thoroughly and then gave us a medical certificate to say that the contagious period was over and that he was fit to travel. We were asked to show the certificate at check in at Sydney airport and if we hadn't had it, they wouldn't have let us fly. As it was, we ended up having a whole row all to ourselves because no one wanted to sit next to us ! The poor thing had scabs absolutely everywhere and looked like an alien......

The good news is - At least it is better to catch it as a child. |

Please have these pills for your headache. luckily we were travelling by car and night ferry so could hide quite nicely. so if you think that your little boy will not be contagious get a letter from the doc or they will not let you travel and dont take the little girl to the doctors. Sorry that is proberbly not what you wanted to hear, best of luck and hope it goes right. halflinggirl |
Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
:o
Many thanks for all of your replys - its amazing how often this happens. Quite a few friends have told me their chickenpox and travel stories. I have just returned from the doc's, who - much to the delight of my son - said he shouldn't go to school for the rest of the week but would be fine to fly next week and would do a letter. But my reason for going to the doc's this morning wasn't my son....no. My little 3 year old has a stinking cold and a gland as big as a plum on her neck!! Never rains but it pours. You wait - the morning we are due to fly out whats the betting she develops a nice little rash of spots. Is someone somewhere trying to stop us leaving the country??? I need an extremely large bar of chocolate or  I'm sure we will look back and laugh...ha. ha. |

MY DAUGHTER CAME DOWN WITH CHICKEN POX THE DAY BEFORE I WAS FLYING TO BARBADOS TO SEE MY HUSBAND WHO HAD BEEN THERE FOR 6 MONTHS (ROYAL NAVY). i COVERED HER IN FOUNDATION AND MADE HER WEAR A HAT AND LONG SLEEVES TOP AND TROUSERS. WE GOT THERE ALRIGHT, AND ONCE THERE EVERYONE THOUGHT SHE HAD MOSSY BITES. A BIT IRRISPONSIBLE, ESPECIALLY WITH ME BEING A NURSE, I SHOULD KNOW BETTER. THE ONE THAT HAS CHICKEN POX SHOULD BE OK TO FLY NEXT WEEK ANYWAY. CHICKEN POX IS ONLY CATCHING WHEN THE SPOTS ARE WET, ONCE THEY ARE DRY (SCABBY) THEY ARE NO LONGER CATCHING. SO YOU SHOULD BE OK. JUST HOPE NO MORE COME DOWN WITH IT IN THE MEAN TIME. PUT NEAT TEETREE OIL ON THE SPOTS. ALSO LACTOCALAMINE IS GOOD.BOTH GOOD. GOOD LUCK PAULA |

halflinggirl Fortunately any airline with switched on crew will NOT let you board. |
Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
Hi Paula
Not surprised you resorted to the undercover look after not seeing your husband for so long. We are trying to be positive about my daughter NOT getting it until we are there and having a laugh about how we could disguise her....my fav at the moment is a beautiful LARGE and spotty butterfly painted on her face!!!! But if push came to shove, I don't think I could do that - esp if she was grotty with it - a long haul flight and an unhappy child. Not a good combo. My new nightmare is that she has no spots when we leave Heathrow but by the time we get to our mid way destination she's covered in them and they won't let us go through to Oz.....not that I'm looking for problems...but these scenarios keep raising their ugly heads!! Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
Heather,
Conincidentally my friend who works for an airline has just been on the phone - his advice is, if they see a child with pox spots, they will want a doctors letter to say the child is not contagious. If you have a second child, they may refuse boarding on the grounds that the un-spotty child may be contagious. In addition - and I'm not scaremongering, he has known this done - if the child develops fever/spots (or shows signs of any contagious disease) during the flight, the plane may be diverted in mid-flight to the nearest airport with the traveller (ie you) picking up the bill. If you have travel insurance, I think now is the time to look at it. Sorry not to bear better news Polly |

Re: Chickenpox...Aargh!
You obviously have not seen or do not know how sick a child/adult can get with chickenpox. Not only is your child at risk travelling while sick but also so is everyone else they may pass this on to.
My son was hospitalized with Chicken Pox when he was 17 years old, so sick he was put in ICU, 2 weeks to the day he came down with it my 19 yr old daughter broke out. There is a 14 day contamination period....time for your youngest to be sick while you are travelling. Not a good idea for anyone :( |
