Post Cheapest way to get to Perth or Darwin

Is it best to get a direct flight to either Perth or Darwin from the UK.
Best fares found today Perth£652 and Darwin £798

or

get a flight to either Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne all around the £450 mark and then get an internal flight onwards.
Would this be the cheaper option? Has anyone else gone this route?

£450 for MEL. That sounds a bit cheap, where did you get that from ?

Probably best to do the flight to Perth. That way you're not screwing around with baggage and the like. Besides, it will probably work out to about the same price anyway.
