Default Cheap Phone Calls - Skype

Skype has been mentioned on here many times as a good way to make cheap (free) phone calls around the world. I've just come across a new site with a whole load of downloads, hardware, etc to make Skype even better!

Take a look - http://summitcircle.com/

It's nothing to do with me, I'm just passing it on. AFAIK it should be OK to link to it but double-check if you're uncertain

There is a lot of competition in this space now and http://www.expattelecom.biz is another good website to look at, either computer based communication or you can connect a SIP phone to your broadband router and as such you can make and recieve IP calls without your PC being on. You can also purchase routers that allow normal phones to be connected and make IP calls via your everyday handset.

Will give it a go....

Basically the technology uses the internet to relay your voice and/or video calls, due to the bandwidth demand of Voice over IP you need Broadband access speeds to make this usable. You can acces this technology via:

1) your computer using software that is downloadable from the various websites offer these services (problem being your PC has to be on to receive calls)

2) SIP Phone (http://www.nwfusion.com/research/2004/0510sipwhat.html) which replaces the need for your PC and associated software for making IP calls. You need to connect the phone to a Broadband router which can be left on even when your PC is switched off.

3) You can use a Bridge to connect your standard phone to use Voice over IP (VOIP)

The benefits of VOIP is that you can talk for free to other people who subscribe to VOIP, plus you can make calls to standard landlines/mobiles for very reasonable rates also. Via the link I attached you can see the various options that that company offers, ranging from Free to Monthly subscriptions. If you decide to subscribe some of the packages you also get the option to have a UK phone number assigned to your phone, either a generic national number (0870) or area specific (01273). This may be useful for people who maintain business contact with clients in the UK or Europe. It is also useful if your have friends or relatives back home that are on one of the "All inclusive" national calls packages (ie OneTel) as they will then be able to call you for no extra cost...You can also call 0800, 0845, 0870 numbers via your VOIP connection which would otherwise be inaccessible from overseas.

Basically there are loads of benefits to it and I have only touched the surface of the voice side, not to mention video calls etc

Hopefully this is easier to understand, although looking back at the length of the posting....who knows!

Cheers

Paul

PS GOOD LUCK!
