Check with Virgin Atlantic, you may be able to book all the way through to London with Virgin. That is using Virgin Blue to Sydney and then Virgin Atlantic via Hong Kong to Heathrow. It will could be a code share so your baggage will be checked all the way through from MEL to LHR, ie you will not have to re-check in in SYD. Should think most major Virgin Blue routes will link in with Virgin Atlantic soon to go all the way through to LHR. May not be the cheapest, but certainly the best!!

we found bestflights to be the cheapest from Aus to UK return, but they`re not the most professional.... triple-check everything.

We booked direct with Singapore airlines on-line and got a good price. U can also incorporate a stopover (not that we did).
