I stayed at "Wake-Up" and was very impressed - clean, friendly, good facilities, very good location. (But bear in mind this was 2yrs ago....).

There are mixed and single-sex dorms, as well as some private rooms.

As with most of these places, the bulk of the clientele was early/mid-20s, but at 35 I didn't feel unwelcome.

An airport shuttle dropped me right at the door for about $10. I remember it being very busy and popular, so I'd book ahead.

Good luck!

Good cheap, clean & basic accommodation (not backpacker) at http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule...he_hotel.shtml

Wife & I stopped there last year for a week and it was very central, as well as just far enough outside Kings Cross red light strip. Walk to CBD 20min and Kings Cross train station 5min. Darlinghurst cafes/restaurant just around the corner.
