You would definitely get a very good Falcon for between 4 and 5 K.... probably around 2002.

I love my Getz.
Its our second car that I use to drive to work.
Was it the best little car in 2005.
I will buy another one I reckon.

I picked up an 02 Falcon Wagon for $5500 two years ago and it's been great, never let me down and I'm up to 200k. Great for everyday running around, trips to the tip, to Ikea, great for holidays and long journeys, carrying the dog around. Never needs to rev over 2500 a minute. I'd have another one any day. Headlining fell down also, peeled off the foam fabric and replaced with vinyl . . sweet as a nut.

Can't understand the bad rep they get on here.

Must be an anti-Australian thing.

Is it that the AU model?

Yeh last of the AU (AU III). I'd probably avoid the first few years of the BA, always take them a while to sort out any issues.

Ran over a dear (edit: not an old dear but a deer lol) in it a couple of weeks back. Any other car would probably have been written off (given it's age and value) . . . new front bumper, wing, bonnet, radiator grille, headlight cluster, resprayed roof . . . good as new.

How did you do the Vinyl ? Was it padded, or did you leave a gap between it and the roof ? I got quoted over 500 bucks to replace our SWagons lining.

Coindiently My EL is at the Mechanics today... the Fuel pump is playing up (it actually was stopping whilst driving) and being replaced... will cost less than 250 bucks fitted... They have to do something quite tricky with the fuel tank apparently. It's been years since it gave me any problems previously... last one was the Air Con... I think that was around 500 to 600 bucks about 4 years ago.

I'm not making them sound as good as they are am I ? lol.

BTW... Two main reasons I'm going to keep ours, besides the Engine being in really good nick..... Firewood for the Winter... it can go in the older one and we can tow over a ton... plus my Older girls are always moving house, and they are invaluable for moving larger items around, which we seem to do a lot.

I was actually looking at this one longingly for a while.... till my Mechanic brought me back to Earth. Probably saved me a fortune

The headlining is just a thin board with the fabric faced foam material stuck to it. Took out the whole lining through the wagon door, had to remove some of the trim from the pillars etc, scraped all the old foam off, then used contact adhesive on both the vinyl (grey, not padded, from Spotlight, might've been $20 for a couple of metres) and the headlining and glued it down a bit at a time. Vinyl was just stretchy enough to take the shape. Back in through the door and fix it back up. Took an afternoon.

I've had a new rad and a couple of front wheel bearing in the two years I've had it. Rad was $400, new part and install, wheel bearings $250.

To be honest, it's so utilitarian, that the only thing I could think of replacing it with, would be another one.

Love the old Merc 123 and 124s, 300TE best of the bunch. I used to have a 230CE (1982) in the UK, best car I've ever had. Had the same conversation with my mechanic with the same end result. The repair that cost $250 on the Falcon would be minimum $1000 on the Merc.

Here's a headlining replacement link

http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...-detailed.html

The good thing about using vinyl is that its non absorbent, so you can use a stronger glue and it won't soak through the fabric.
