Default Cheap Car Hire in Melbourne - what to expext?

We're thinking of renting a car for a while before buying, there's just the two of us so something cheap and cheerful/no frills would suffice - any company recommendations for Melbourne? Any words on price?

I am using Thrifty car rentals in Melbourne - approx $40 per day. They don't drive small cars out here (85p a litre!) so a small car out here is a hyundai i30 type.
Most cars are auto also - as aussies can't be bothered with gear changing

If you don't want a new car and only travelling in Metro try some of the second tier renters such as "rent a wreck"

Dont know about Melbourne (but I expect its the same ) , you can hire a car from local car repair yards $20 for 3yr old to $30 for new cars.
