Does anyone have any info on companies who offer cheap calls to the UK from Aus, particularly to mobiles. My three techno (adult) kids who are staying in the UK don't believe in landlines, so if I want to call them it will have to be on their mobiles. :scared: They are also too tight to have the internet at home (they use it at work and spend the money on socialising!!) so I can't use that to call them either. When I call my friend in Aus from the UK I can get a 1p a minute rate - is there something similar in Australia? We will be on our way in a couple of weeks (employer visa) so I am keen to find out, as my kids commonly talk on the phone for more than an hour to me!!!!

Not sure how this works so hopefully someone else might know, but, we have a little box that uses the internet to phone but it has a UK number so any calls made on it are charged at UK rate. The line rental is something like 4 pound a month and it acts like a pay as you go phone so you top up your credit by payment on a credit card. If you call someone else with a similar system then the call is free.

I too used to pay 1p per min to call Oz from the UK but would love to find a number I can call from Oz to get discounted calls the UK (if any exist!)

So far best I've got is a 'Talk Tomato' phone card that after about 20 attempts, cannot connect to any UK numbers!

another option is to have a uk mobile like vodafone pay as u go .. we are on contract so not sure if vodafone passport is valid on pay as u go but I know alot of people who have gone a a gap year and they have 2 phones one uk for calling uk and one aus for using in aus ..

another way is to use skype I know u said that they are not on the internet but for the people u talk to on the web skype is free ..and for the land lines u pay I think it is quite cheap... all u do is download to ur computer then anyone else who also has skype u can video talk via web cam or just talk via microphone .. hope this helps ....

Actually - you can use the Internet to call them. Just buy some SkypeOut credits on your Skype account and call them on their mobiles from your PC. Rates to mobiles listed below:
