cheap calling cards for uk
I've heard that you can buy cards in shops that give really cheap rates for dialling the uk? Is this true? Currently I am with telstra and pay $5 for up to an hour which is very reasonable but as I phone home so much it adds up to quite a high monthly bill

There are tons of pre-paid phone cards that are pretty good value. one thing to look for though is wheather they have a connection fee.
I cant give you specific names to the good ones, I only use cards I buy while in the uk which is the "banana" card.

Luke's right, just head into any newsagents and take your pick.
I use chi-tel: no connection charge though I do have to pay for a local call (17-30c depending on your telstra package), but if you hang on after the first call you can then call someone else without redialling. For a 30 dollar card I get around 15 hours of talk.
There are even cheaper call rates but watch out for connection fees + local call charge and things like the first minute of a call only being 17 seconds long. And some companies don't last 5 minutes so beware of paying too much upfront... and most cards have a use by limit of 6 months.
I remember finding a web page comparing cards, but it wasn't worth the time hunting through for the minute differences.

Yeap loads at the newsagent. We got bonus as there are no connection charges and 2.5cents a minute. Really Cheap. You can either recharge them by credit card or buy another.

Try any news agent or petrol station. You can get the cards for any amount you like and a $20 lasts for ages. A half hour call is usually less than a buck. Go Bananas seem around the best as there is no connection fee.

We use hello - for $5 you could talk all week. Buy them from news agents or petrol stations. You can also buy them on line

I've never used this website to buy from so use it at your own risk!!!
The added bonus of usiong a card for international calls is that your not hit with a huge quarterly bill.

I used to use Telstra PhoneAway but now use SuperBuzz after the very helpful woman in the Post Office said they were good. There is a 39c connection charge (but you dial a 1800 number to access the system) so maybe good for long calls only(?). Used it for the first time yesterday and it said my $20 card was good for a 11+ hour call which seems pretty good.

If your calling from UK to Oz we use the "Number 1" phone card (has a picture of a tiger on the card).
We have found this one to offer the most time and you usually get bonus time when you buy a new card.

We've used the Minute Max card since arriving in Melbourne. It's 1.8c per minute to the UK, and claims not to have any connection charges. (But you do have to make a local call to make the connection!).
You also get a bonus $2 if you buy a $20 card.
The only downside has been a) getting cut off after one hour (seems to do this automatically) and b) occasionally not being able to make a connection (e.g. on Xmas Day). Oh, and c) I used it from a mobile once and it cost a fortune - that's because it's designed for calling from a capital city landline.
Otherwise pretty good.

Hi guys,
Not been on for a while....been holidaying around Oz....
Anyway, the cheapest card I've found is one called 'OzCall'. Their rates have just dropped from 1.9 to 0.9c per min. Check their website for details of connection charges.

If you call from UK.
Here are the best, for my knowledge, prices and the best service – www.topup2call.co.uk.
Calls abroad from UK start from 1p per min. You can call from landline and from mobile as well. What you have to do: text the message BONUS to the number 83006. This text will cost you £3 and they will credit your phone with £3 of call credit.
Or: simply dial 0901 366 4310 from a BT phone to gain a £1 credit. During the call choose the phone you want the £1 to be transferred to.
It can be ANY phone - landline or mobile. You can - for example - charge up your mobile using your home or office phone. When topping up via the text message method only the mobile phone from which the text message is sent can be topped up.
Or you can dial from your landline using access numbers 0870 794 4520 (wkdays, national rate) and 0844 570 4520 (wkend 5p).
