Default Charitable Donations and Tax

If I hypothetically gave $1000 to a charity can I claim this ALL back on tax? Confused as to how it works. Any help appreciated. Cheers.

I think you can claim the tax back, ie if you are a 40% tax payer you can claim back $400.

No doubt someone will speak up if I'm wrong

You are reducing your income by this $1000, so it is the tax that you would have paid on this amount.

Assuming you're asking about Australian tax, have you looked at the ATO website?

So it has to be an Australian charity or can it be overseas?

Making tax deductible donations
Looking at the DGR Table, most recipients must be Australian based with the exception of ancilliary funds.

So no I don't believe that it has to be an Australian charity.

I'm fairly sure you can claim things like sponsor a child etc, They are basically overseas. As long as you have receipts to prove this.

Another tip... anyhousehold can claim at least 50 dollars per Adult, Paid to collectors at the front door etc.... Without a Receipt !!! ..... Thats almost 3/4's of a tax agents fees.... just in that tip.
