Changing childcare qualifications !!
So I've been here in nsw for 4 wks I've filled out the forms and paid for an assessment to have my child care qualifications change into Australian ones . I did this when I first arrived and today i got An email saying they will be starting the assessment soon if all info is there but it can take up to 8 wks !
8 wks !! If I'm correct it means I cannot start work in my filed of work ( day care ) until I have the result from the assessment . Does anyone know if this is the case ? So far you can only email the people Dealing with the assessment and they ate not the most helpful and so far I've had no reply to that question . My next question is what happens if they say my qualifications arnt enough ( tbh I don't seein them saying that but you never know ) I'm on a 176 family sponsor visa and my job nursery co ordintor was on the sol list hence why I got the visa . So if they were to say I'm not qualified to do that job then what ? Even though my skill assessment was passed successfully allow me to gain my visa ? I'm frustrated there is no one here that can offer support / help . Then Job centers cant help me because I'm not on benefit . I'm under the impression I cannot claim Benefit here not that I want too ! I just want to get on and get my life back doing a job I love ! Has anyone or does anyone have any advice /knowledge in child care that can help me out ? |
Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
I'd guess that you can't work until qualified as childcare is a fairly serious business.

Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
I thought that you could work in a childcare-centre as a non-qualified until your quals are equivocated. Less money but still a job.
I think by next year everybody will need at least Level III, but for now some positions don't need anything. I'll check with wife (NNEB) when she gets in. |
Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
Hi,
I came over with childcare qualifications, I sent my certified certificates off to be assessed and i don't remember them taking 8 weeks, but this maybe the case now as this was back in 2008. You don't actually get your UK qualifications 'changed', you will just get a letter saying that your qualifications are equivalence to a qualified child care worker- Granted letter.(this is in Melbourne, so maybe different in different places.) You should be able to work in a childcare centre as an assistant , probably get paid less until your certificates are assessed, then once they see the letter you should be able to go for qualified positions. There is usually heaps of work for casuals anywhere, in almost every centre going anyway.Hope this helps :) |
Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
I'm about to complete my cert III. As I understand it you do not have to be qualified at present. Some of the people at the centres I did my placement at were unqualified but all working towards the cert III as this is going to be a requirement soon.

Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
Thanks for the help everyone . I'll just need to to wait it out I guess . Im an assistant manage at home and it s takin 6 years of study to get qualified enough to now manage a nursery . The thought of being right back at the bottom I feel isn't an option for me. They have just changed the way they do the assesment in january . And you do now recive a certificate . The system is new and by the looks of it not menu people have went through the process yet . So fingers crossed I guess that it dosnt take 8 wks ! Thanks again .

Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
I was told mine would take 8 weeks but they came back after about 2 weeks, i am in QLD., it was the police check (blue card) that took the longest i had to wait about 4 weeks for that so if you dont have it already apply now.

Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
My fiancee had a UK cache diploma in childcare and when we arrived, she had it assessed and apparently it's classed the equivalent as a Certificate IV here in SA. She managed to get a job as Room Leader after a couple of weeks here, but has just completed some TAFE units to receive her Australian Diploma as many centres refuse to accept the cert IV as 'qualified'.

Re: Changing childcare qualifications !!
As Dorothy said getting your licence in Australia has nothing to do with immigration. A visa is just the means to get here, working in your field may have different requirements. Most people apply for these things prior to arrival so they don't have the long wait to be able to work.
Prior to coming to Australia I looking into getting my teaching qualifications recognized. I knew there would be a wait so if I needed it right away then I would have applied. As I was still at home with the kids I didn't worry about it and waited until I got here to apply. It took them 4 months to approve me so it was a good thing I didn't need to work! Hopefully yours will come quickly! |

Hope she didn't pay TAFE fees http://www.deewr.gov.au/Earlychildho...fTAFEfees.aspx Newcomers note that diploma and adv. dip. training is free, for now, to encourage more workers. |

Australians going to the UK to work have the same problem, the requirements are different. You'll find that in many walks of life here - the ones I could name from the things I have done in one day, today? rules for international postage, rules for drinking alcohol, rules for renting a unit (flat), and rules for learning to drive. We may not like it, but its very different here, and we have to live with it. |
