Hi Ian,

Hope this helps.

In Australia, statutory declarations must be witnesses by a person authorised by the Statutory Declarations Act 1959 and Regulations. Authorised persons include, but are not limited to:
  • a bank officer with at least 5 years of continuous service
  • a full time teacher
  • a Justice of the Peace
  • a legal practitioner
  • a medical practitioner
  • a notary public
  • a pharmacist
  • a police officer

If you are outside Australia and are unable to get an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident to provide or witness a statutory declaration in support of your relationship, you may wish instead to provide supporting statements from other friends or family members. A solicitor or notary public should generally witness these supporting statements, but this requirement may differ depending on which country you are in.

Similarly for certified copies of documentation for Trade/Qualification Assessment/Verification, the copies must be certified by a person before whom a statutory declaration may be made under the Statutory Declarations Act 1959. These people include Solicitors, Justice of the Peace, Police Office, Notary, etc.

Magistrates is usually the best as it's generally free - but make sure you check out what is acceptable by the assessing body. The IEAust have very particular requirements for certified copies for example - don't know about the TRA.

If only that was true everywher, my local court wanted £6 per sheet (and that was the reduced rate if I photocopied it).

Phone around local solicitors and tell them how many copies I had quotes from £5 per sheet to £20 for the lot.

Courts often do it for free or a very small nominal charge.

I was charged £8 for 30 documents and I had to sit in court for 30 mins and wait whilst they signed them!!! This was the most scary bit of all!!!

If you don't fancy the court, try other solicitors, some charge loads and some don't. I found a friendly one locally when I needed two extra docs doing and he did it for free, so I dropped round a bottle of wine just in case I need to get any more done!

Hi Ian
We contacted our local council office and asked for the names of our local JP in our town. They gave us his phone number and we arranged to go to his house easy as that. Hope you get it done.
Cheers Carole
