Hiya guys
Just been trawling through the IATA and AQUIS stuff. I've also e-mailed airpets for info. It looks like it's easiest to get a company to do all the red tape for you... anyone got any recommendations?
Meanwhile, I'll post some of my links and general stuff I've gleaned.

Animals may become stressed and aggressive when travelling by air and should not be placed in the same container unless they are young puppies or kittens. Animals which share the same household may become stressed and aggressive towards each other when traveling by air.
Minimum container requirements, as describe in the Live Animals Regulations, are mandatory for transportation of animals by air.

You must complete one application for each cat or dog.
A sum of AUD $260 must be sent with the application/s. This fee is payable only once per owner (phew!) when multiple pets arrive in Australia at the same time.
Animals need to be chipped, rabies jab optional I think? This would be necessary to avoid problems in bringing the animal back to the UK.
Vets have to be government approved – not usual private practice vets.

GENERAL VACCINATIONS - done by gov approved vet...
Time frame: Between 1 year and 14 days prior to export.

Vaccinations must be valid for the entire period spent in quarantine in Australia. If vaccinations expire prior to your pet’s release from quarantine they may be re-vaccinated at the owner’s expense.
Cats must have been vaccinated against feline enteritis (feline panleucopenia, feline distemper), rhinotracheitis and calicivirus.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PARASITE TREATMENT
Time frame: Within 4 days of export. This can be done at the same time as the completion of Veterinary Certificate A.
Cats must be treated with a product approved for the treatment of ticks and fleas. Oral products, injections and medicated collars are not satisfactory neither are products that rely on the tick biting your pet. Washes and rinses that prevent ticks and tick bites are acceptable.

i would say just 'bugger it and leave all pets behind' but then again I'm just a nasty bugger who's not animal friendly.....Hey...I'd leave the kids behind if I could!!! ;) :D

We are bringing 2 cats. The are going into seperate crates for air travel but I mailed perth and they can share in the quaratine. I think they would prefer that and it's cheaper. They said as long as they had travelled together on the same flight it would be ok even though they are not sharing a crate or whatever it's called.

Looked at Airpets but finally decided on 'Overhill'. A) They are based in Bristol so we just have to take them - not far and also they are cheaper. Nice friendly people 01275 832489.

Hi Larissa, we are heading to Melb shortly and will be taking out two cats, I had quote from airpets, but decided against it due to the cost, worked out that they charge 500 pound more than I can do it by myself, It's pretty striaght forward to be honest, once you get your head around it, I had an email from aqis in melbourne detailing all the costs.

Rabies is only applicable for animals travelling to europe as Britain and oz are rabies free.

Good luck with this Larissa. Australia has arguably the strictest quarantine on Earth and I know bringing any pet there can be an ordeal.

Have you sorted your vet out yet? That's my next line of research - to find out and cost government vets... good luck!
