Cats in Melbourne
No, not the Lloyd Webber musical
We're planning to take our 2 moggies to Melbourne (DIMIA willing). Have heard that Victoria is the strictest state about Pet ownership & that you have to effectively 'cage' your cats to protect native wildlife. As a keen conservationist, I'm for this in principle, but wondered if anyone knows answers to the following:
Does this rule apply 24*7 or just daylight hours? (our guys stay in at night in any case, to protect the *English* wildlife!)
Do all areas in Melbourne have this rule, or is it just if you live near a wildlife reserve?
Do people actually adhere to the laws?
If you cat gets out accidentally, does the Nasty Cat Catcher come & do Something Unspeakable to it?
Also, will we have any problems renting in Melbourne with our 2 (very clean and neat) companions?
Many thanks, all info appreciated.
Anya.

Your cats will need to be registered with the council and a licence obtained.
The matter of cages is a bit contraversial. The thing is that there is no state wide policy here, but some local councils have those restrictions on cat owners. In those areas the cats need to be kept in at night only as the numbskull councils believe that they are running wild killing everything. My opinnion,a good cat kills anything that moves..vermin ,spiders and annoying birds.
You may want to check with the council office that covers the area you are goind to live in.Try www.vic.gov.au
Don't let the rumors put you off, there are plenty of cats roaming around here.
