Default Carpet fitting in Australia all advice welcome

Hi all,
I am a 22 year old qualified carpet fitter in England, I am currently working as a self employed contractor and I am registered as a business with the DWP. I want to come to Australia for a 12 month travelling/working holiday but I want to work as a contractor rather than as a employed worker. I would also like to bring a lad with me who also works with me on a self employed basis, I am capable of funding myself and my lad for at least a 6 month peroid without work. So my question is; is this possible? If so how would I go about setting this up eg. Visa's, Tax etc? Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jamie B.

You just both need working holiday visas - I am assuming he is over 18.

You can apply on line and get them within a day or two.

You will need proffessional advice about working as self employed, but I believe it is possible, but complex as a working holiday visa only let's you work for one employer for a maximum of 6 months

Hi Jamie

I don't have a lot of knowledge about the specifics of the 417 (work/holiday visa), but I do know that a 'contractor' is defined by the Australian Taxation Office as:
[I] Contractors run their own business and provide services......I]
https://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-a...or-contractor/

A 417 visa is for young people who want to have a holiday in Australia, and do incidental work to help finance this holiday. If you want to set up as a contractor, ie run your own business, I'd imagine that you'd need to seek a different class of visa.

You can't add anyone to a 417 visa, not even a spouse - they need to apply for their own visa.

I'm sure there'll be other people along who know more about this.
