Carpenter wages in Perth?
 

Just a quick question wondering what the average rate for a self employed carpenter is in Perth? And expat carpenters that can help would be great!

From experience I think you should avergage about $35 an hour, give or take a little. Again it varies depending on what aspect of carpentry you find work in.

I wouldnt say work is plentiful but you should be able to get something, even if its not ideal initially. My OH worked on Donga's for a few weeks when we arrived, even though there was not a bit of wood in site it was advertised as a carpentry job.

Some observations that he as noticed is that carpenters here tend to specialise manly in one area, ie roof carpenter, formwork, etc. Not many work "across the board" and he has been told by a colleague that now in college they also teach them in specific areas. How true this is I dont know its just what we have been told. So you many come across as "over qualified" on a resume here?. Though I do also think that it is recognised that a UK carpenter has a boarder spectrum of work as you do get jobs advertised that "would suit UK or kiwi".

Also, a "joiner/cabinet maker" here tends to be more of a kitchen fitter/installer, whereas my OH viewed "cabinet maker" in Uk as furniture maker, so he avoided looking at those jobs advertised etc, but live and learn eh!

Well on the subject of that artical I guess it's no worse off than the uk. It's a struggle to find work here outside of agency work which pays terribly so I'd be quite happy working hard to find work out there if the lifestyle is the main important difference. On a plus I'd be going out on my wife's visa as she is a registered mental health nurse so geeing work wouldn't be as pressurising for me.

That really interesting about what they classify as specific areas of carpentry. I too would of dodged the cabinet making thinking the same as your OH!

I guess when we do make the move I'll just have to be super proactive with job finding and putting myself out there! $35 an hr is hardly awful on any day of the week so jointly we'd do ok.
