Point taken, but it has to be Perth as my wife lived over there for 8 years, and we have a network of friends and family, so there really is no other option.

Trust me to get invloved in the "wrong" database system all those years ago
Well, moving to Perth might be just the thing. You may well be forced out of IT and end up doing something a whole lot better.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply - unfortunately Oracle is the one that I have no experience in whatsoever, and also the one that would be hardest to gain experience in. Sod and his law strike again.

I too had the same notion that I would get out of IT when we go over - it's hardly an exciting life, is it? But the 64 million dollar question is - what to do which will enable you to earn enough to keep to the standard of living that IT pays for over here?

If I knew that, I'd be a happy man.

In Perth and WA the highest paid jobs are generally in the mining and geology sectors.

There have been a few new "finds" and the mining consultancies are expanding rapidly to deal with this. One company I've had an interview with have already taken on about 30% more staff and they expect to double in size in the next year or so. They are also expanding most of their systems to cope with the increased workloads. They say that the next 10 years could be another boom time.

Also real estate of course. Apparently because Perth and WA are set to boom the real estate agents are already rubbing their hands in glee.

I had been told by friends in Perth that they thought I'd make a good Real Estate agent (should I take that as a compliment
 ) so had started studying Estate Agency over here with a view to get some experience and trying it over there. I've taken and passed the first of 4 exams.

Only thing is, on talking to an agent when we were last over in April, you need about 12 months money behind you when you start in the business because that's how long it can take to start earning a decent wage.

Also, am I correct in thinking that Real Estate agents have the same reputation as over here? i.e. they're all cowboys/second-hand car salesman/low-lifes/etc...

Mind you, I wouldn't mind snooping around other peoples houses for a living :)
