Car rentals

Do the car rental outfits in Australia (Melbourne in particular), hire out cars with drivers, at an extra cost? Does this work out economical compared to engaging a cab?

Thinking of avoiding driving in a new place, on the other side of the road, at least when I visit for a holiday-cum-scouting trip, later in August.

I would be thankful for your ideas/suggestions.

Cheers

We drive on the left here you know.........never heard of a car rental firm hiring a
car with driver......that doesn't mean they don't of course........but Melbourne is
easier than most places to find yourself around anyway.....this is Australia not
USA.......you wont have a problem. Rob

Hi Thomas,

I have heard of firms that hire out cars with drivers,
but I've always referred to them as taxis!!!!!

(sorry-couldn't resist)

You write via Britishexpats, but I guess you're not British because Oz drive on the
same side of the road as the UK and a Brit would probably have used the term "car
hire" rather than "car rental". So let's assume you currently drive of the right-hand
side of the road.

Don't be afraid. Give it a go. Millions of Brits rent cars in the US and enjoy the
experience even if they were initially apprehensive about driving on the 'wrong' side
of the road. You quickly get the hang of it.

Re: Car rentals

And they have shiney Holden Commodores with auto transmission - just like a big
go-kart. Except when I went to Melbourne I ended up going the wrong way and end up
out in the sticks - too busy messing with the cruise control!
