Hi Corker.

We had M1 NGY on our car, my husand is called Mark Ingham & his nikname was Ingy. He loved the plate which cost £3000. We recently sold it for half price because he can't take it, he was near to tears .

The reason I ask is because we are in England at the moment & are going to order our new car from a Garage in Australia soon & would hate to buy it & when we get there at the end of this month find a newer reg has come out.

As far as I'm aware (in Vic) the number plates don't change each year as they do in uk. I cannot tell how old a car is by looking at its number plate and the car salesman said you cant tell! The good thing is that people don't 'have' to have the latest car to keep up with the Jones's. Why would it matter anyway if you bought a car, then the plates did change?? So what!!

The number plates do not change in the same way. Although different groups of number plates do come out, so some people, (but very few), can see which cars have "new" plates.
However.... that doesn't mean it is a new car.

People can change the number plate for various reasons, and end up with a new plate on a 20 year old car. We did that with our two cars when we moved from NSW to QLD, as each State has it's own number system (but they aren't 20 yrs old )

What you do have to watch out for is the "Compliance Plate" date.
eg: You may buy a new car in 2005 for example, but it may be a 2004 build date, and that is what people seem to look out for here.

As far as I can make out, in NSW the new number plates are starting with an A, but this doesnt mean that only this year will have an A. From what I have noticed is that all new regs are made up of 2 letters, 2 numbers, 2 letters and the first ones are A?, ours is AE ???? I think they must have started at AA then AB etc and will work through then I presume start again at BA, BB etc.

FXtrader is an unknown quantity at this point

You may already know this but, by the way, there is no MOT so to speak, only need to have a vehicle inspection done if you sell the car, or the police stop you and tell you to fix something.
The number plates remain the property of the Gov at all times, although you can take a personalised plate with you, it's yours forever, even if you leave the country I think.
Cheers.

That's not actually correct for the whole country

It is correct for QLD, but NSW, amongst other States, does have an annual inspection before the car can be registered each year.
