Car Prices - Is this right!
 

Hi,

I was looking on the Australian site carpoint.com.au and noticed the following car up for sale:

FIAT COUPE 20V TURBO (1997) - $49000 (£17'500)

The same car in the U.K would sell for around £7500.

Is this right, or am I missing something. I am aware that the costs involved in shipping a car like this is over there are around the £4000 mark, however this would still make the U.K car £6000 cheaper.

Are there any other make/models that have such a differential market value.

Any one in the land of oppotunity with knowledge of this, please advise.

I think as a general rule of thumb European makes are a usually a much higher price than the Australian and Japanese makes.

try to compare a Toyota Land Cruiser between the 2 UK price £25,000 to £35,000 Oz
price $20,000 to $45,000

Hi Glenn,

i found out much the same. My 5yr old MX-5 will only get around £4k here in UK and equivalnet in Aus is £11k!

To get an even more accurate indication, have a look at
www.redbook.com.au which gives book
retail/wholesale price indicators and is used by most car dealers less their margin
of course.

I found a Land Cruiser 100 for over $87k on
www.toyota.co.uk and it didn't have as good an
engine as the UK model.

What Land Cruiser sells for $20k in Oz ? Got a link ? I find it too hard to believe
unless it's a stripped down pickup, and even then it's suspiciously cheap.

Hi Glen,
Yes, second hand cars are a lot more expensive over here....BUT...they will last a hell of a lot longer because we don't have to put salt down on the roads to get rid of the snow and ice....usually putting a new engine in will give you a virtually new car again.

Hi all

Don't get too carried away!

We looked at importing a 2nd hand CLK Merc which cost £30,000 in the UK and sells
here in Oz for the equivalent of £60,000 (A very nice profit indeed!).

Anyway when you research this you will find that you now need to own the car for 12
months prior to import, then there is the shipping and insurance costs, followed by
import duty then luxury car tax (50+ %) and also the risk that it will require
modifictions to get plated for use in Oz. Guess what! The total bill comes to the
selling price in Australia.

Coincidence?

No No New Zealand has some dirt cheap seconds. Many being Jap imports. See as
Australians we protect our car industry and this costs us directly. Checkout
www.autopoint.co.nz and compare this to the
Australian prices. Why NZ has no car industry and we do. Oh I live over here now so I

I'm moving out to Aus and I find the car thing really interesting. Am I to assume
that the only way to ensure Aus has a car industry is to artificially price all
imports to a point where an Aus made car is really the only viable financial option?

Have you ever heard of making and designing a better product than your competitors?

I remember a story that Japan used to allow foreign fresh foodsuffs to be imported as
long as they passed certain checks. Then they would leave them at the docks until
they rotted before checking them. Of course they failed the checks and no-one
bothered to try to import them again.

Thank god countries don't use anti-cometitive practices anymore like taxing the
competition out of the market!

You will have to pay stamp duty on top of sale price on new and second cars in Australia.:D :beer:
