Car Prices in Melbourne
Hi all.
I just checked out car prices on this website http://www.autoshow.com.au/
and it said a 1994 Ford Laser KH GL, is on for sale at $5,222! That's nearly £3000 for what is no more than a 15 year old Ford Escort!!!! I could pick one of those up here for about 200 quid. Also $10,500 for a 6 year old Ford Falcon (Mondeo) Estate!!!!!!!!!! Surely cars are not that expensive over there are they!!
Rich.

The FX rate makes it all seem far worse.
Car prices do hold their value more over here.
The other thing you will notice is that car styles are very homogenous.
People like family sedans (saloons) with fairly large engines ie. even a 4cylinder car is likely to have at least a 2 litre engine, where in Europe this is getting to the upper end of the scale for a normal car. People still like the big Fords and Holdens because despite their bad press over big engines (although smaller engines are coming in) at the end of the day they get a lot of car for their money (comparitive BMW, Mercedes and Audi cost a fortune here) in a product they are familar with. And of course, Ford and Holden have a sporting history which interests some Australians. Not everyone wants to get a 4x4 and on a long trip with kids a European car may be too small. We have a Ford Falcon and appreciate it's size with our 2 pre-schoolers and forthcoming infant.
The runabout second Euro-styled 'bubble' car seems less popular over here.

The FX rate makes it all the more shocking, too.
Car prices do hold their value more over here. And they rust a lot slower. I'll never forget seeing a 10 year Rover(!) in the UK with completely rusted wheel arches.

We've got a Falcon wagon (2001) picked up for just over $5k, more than pleased with it to date.

Unfortunately this is the case, a great site to find out how much cars are worth is Red Book it is a lot like the Glass's Guide in the UK http://www.redbook.com.au/
You will also find that as we have no yearly MOT here people hold on to their cars a lot longer as it is when they come to sell them they need to get the Road Worthy.

You can get a 1 year old (2008) Hyundai Getz for 10,000 on the road. With a 4 year dealer warranty.
How does that compare to the UK.... Genuine question ?
