moving to melbourne soon from the uk and thinking about car options.
don't want to spend too much until i make sure family settled. is leasing a viable option? any advice would be great

Leasing only really works on a long-term basis where you are in a position to offset lease costs against tax.

I went to Melbourne in `89. bought a motorbike private and sold it to a shop 5 weeks later the day before I flew out. I lost about $400 from $2000. If it was me now I`d buy a car and sell it if I needed to later. Again even if you sell it at a loss its cheaper than rental/lease.
