Default Car Insurance- No claims discount

Can you transfer your no-claims discount over to Australia when you arrive?

Cheers

There's no official line on it but I understand most insurers will recognise your NCD. I got a copy of my certificate before I left the UK and it was accepted with my insurer

Ask your insurance company for a letter confirming your no-claims discount ...

This will be accepted Oz side.

make sure if you have been with your current company less than 1 full year - if not you may have to contact your previous company & get verification from them also

ours accepted our NCD verbally we sent off the renewal policy as proof (as you do) they then said we had to get extra proof within a very short amount of time or we would be charged double premium! so to save any problems i would get a copy from them before you leave the uk
we were lucky as the perevious company faxed them for us

Steve,

Yes you can as I did it, just make sure you get a copy of your ncd and you will be ok. If the company do not accept it choose another company as there a plenty to choose from.

It covers 3rd party insurance but if your car gets written off, you get nowt. Hence most people take out 'extra' insurance too.

Third party insurance does exactly what it says on the tin - it's there to protect the third party so it's worth absolutely nothing to you.

Some insurance companies will take your word that you have X years NCD. Ours have given a discount, but haven't requested proof. Although I guess if we had to claim they might ask then

It makes a big difference to the premium if you bring proof of your NCD. We didn't but we contacted our insurance company in the UK & they faxed a copy direct to the insurance company here.

BTW, I have found car insurance to be much cheaper here, about a third cheaper actually.

It is actually even less cover than you describe

Compulsory Third Party (CTP, Greenslip) is a compulsory insurance to cover Injury to Third Parties, that must be taken out when registering a motor vehicle.

It covers the owner or driver of the motor vehicle in the event of an accident against any legal liability or obligation that they may have to anyone that they injure, it only covers personal injury and NOT damage to other property cars etc.

That is highly likely.

I suggest providing it to the Insurer, even if they say it isn't needed "at the time"

After all, if and when you do need it, will you be able to find that elusive bit of paper ?
