Car Insurance
Can anyone give me a low down? I've searched the forum but can't find anything, haven't brought a car since been in Aus as I've been working fifo until now. I hear Rego is 3rd party but advised to get fully comp? Can anyone tell me any comparison sites? Thanks.

Re: Car Insurance
Rego covers for injuries to people but not damage you may cause to cars or property
It would be foolish not to buy at least third party insurance on top of the rego at the very least .

Try www.comparethemarket.com.au - NOT to be confused with www.comparethemeerkat.com.au!

There aren't any comparison sites which include the major insurers (Allianz, AAMI, RACQ, NRMA, Suncorp, etc) - at least, none that I have found.

I have used this site...
http://www.iselect.com.au/car/
There is a huge difference in prices across the board dependent upon your age, location and driving record. Be prepared for a price shock if young and no previous insurance history.
I have had comprehensive insurance all my driving life EXCEPT when i owned a $500 bomb, which I then had 3rd party insurance on - just in case I hit someone's Ferrari...or even Commode...;-)
FWIW I changed from Allianz to Coles this year - a difference of $350 pa...
Always compare each year. Don't just renew. You carry your No Claim Bonus (if any) with you so don't let that stop you switching in future.

It is also often (not always) a case of 'you get what you pay for' - make sure you read the T&Cs to ensure the cover is right for you.
An example, not all policies cover hail damage which in QLD at least is an issue. A workmate had cover with an online only provider and just shelled out over $2K to get his roof, bonnet and side panels fixed up!

I'm 25 and have no Australian insurance history...obviously it purely depends on the car but can anyone give me a rough estimate of what it may cost for an average car - stupid question I know, say a Mitsubishi Lancer.

Re: Car Insurance
If getting fully comp insurance make sure you check what's covered/included in your policy for each insurer you get a quote from.
It varies a lot more from insurer to insurer than it does in the UK.

I don't understand why people rely so much on comparison sites - there are reasons certain companies appear on those sites and others don't. Just do the leg work, and visit the websites of each insurer to find out how much they will charge and what's included.

What is everyone else paying for fully comp? Just as an absolutely rough idea.

Re: Car Insurance
Coles is now doing car insurance too. If you are under 25, insurance is v dear but not sure how it will work out if you are now 25. The insurance company will take yr UK history, so no worries here. If you go ahead and purchase a car, don't buy a souped up car like a Golf GTi as the insurance will kill you for yr age. It may be cheaper for you to just rent the car when you need it. If you are near Prahran, I would recommend you Budget on Malvern Road, down from Williams Rd & opposite the Police Station and Hobo (café). Hope this helps.
