Good idea as person paying is the one who has to sign for the car. Think about the extra insurance as if you have an accident you can be liable for up to $5k (I think but I could be exaggerating horrendously). Don't forget your licences - we did on a trip to Queensland and they wouldn't let us have the car even with faxed copies and registration from the Victorian police - long story).

Try www.webjet.com.au they check the main rentals companies and they are cheaper than booking direct with the rental company. I have just got a Full size wagon for $466 for 7 days I think with budget (via webjet)

cheers

Don't pick up at the airport - you pay extra tax on the whole rental! Get a taxi to another location.
Try www.standbycars.com.au

Hi Jackie,

If you are coming here on a PR visa you can rent a car with a discount from www.budget.com.au and click in the box which asks if you are an Oz resident, we just gave our temp address and we didn't even show our visas !!!!!
If I remember rightly it was 50% discount !!!!!! Not to be sneezed at

Good luck
Jane

We used Hertz, pre booked, received upgrade on car upon arrival. No fuss at pick up was on road in 10 mins. Had car for 2 weeks $1000.

We are paying $664 for 14 days including the rental company collecting us from the airport and taking us to the Sunshine Coast. I'd much rather be driven after the long flight and we can just take in our new country!!

Hi guys,

We used east coast car rentals when we arrived....good prices and they capped the cost of child seat hire too

I hope you get an upgrade to a bigger car as 3 adults and 2 kids in anything smaller than a Toyota Camry will be very uncomfortable.

We have always had no problem with Thrifty in fact my father has one with them now and our last friends that were over used them as well. Cars are always good and clean no breakdown problems and they don't try to screw you on return. One tip Thrifty themselves told us try not to get it from the airport as the airport is always slightly dearer arrange to get the car from somwhere in the city if possible. Saying that even if you get at airport doesn't cost a fortune and the longer you get the cheaper it is.
