I would hire before you get there, after the long flight etc it is so much easier knowing the car is all sorted.

Have a search om www.moneysupermarket.co.uk. We went with a company called Major Travel, be very careful though as we thought that we had paid everything in advance, when we got our credit card statement after returning to the UK we found a big charge for extras. The car was supplied by Hertz

We have done it both ways. First time booked a car from UK to pick up at Brisbane airport on arrival and second time arrived at Brisbane and took cab the arranged hire car locally next day. Option 1 was bit cheaper and easier, although not major difference in cost. I have used Avis regularly in the past, but now use Budget for convenience (they are 2 mins down the road). Each time we have visitors who want a car I ring round for quotes and there is usually only a couple of dollars between the majors. I have found Budget to offer slightly better terms than most on insurance and included kms

Re: Car hire question

We used Able, (www.abel.com.au) our friends booked it for us before we came, but you can book on line. The firm collected us at the airport & drove us to the showroom, only few minutes away. Cost about $670 for 2 weeks,on 4 door Nissan.
However, was a good job our frinds came to meet us as well, otherwise No way we'd have got all our cases & luggage in :)
