Default Car hire in Melbourne: cheaper if booked in UK or locally?

I'm trying to sort out car hire for some friends visiting us in Melbourne at Xmas. Can anyone tell me if, these days, it's cheaper to book the car hire from the UK, or direct via one of the rental firms here?

TIA for any help!

Cheers
Anya.

We hired a car from the UK and found that it was pretty much the same. Just get them to book it in the UK. Ask for an upgrade when they arrive if not already given one.
we rented with Thrifty and got a free upgrade on arrival. I think it was $43 per day and ended up with a Mitsubishi Magna.

Thanks - that sounds good. I'll pass it on to them

Cheers,

If you want a cheapie try rent a bomb , generally they are around 5-10 years old, much cheaper and are adequate.

good luck.
